Trump’s $250 Million Whitehouse Ballroom Project Sparks Uproar and Political Backlash

Whitehouse Ballroom

Demolition has officially begun on part of the East Wing of the White House to make way for former President Donald Trump’s planned Whitehouse Ballroom, a project he has touted as “the most beautiful ballroom in the country.”

According to The Washington Post, crews were seen tearing down portions of the building earlier this week, marking the start of one of the largest White House renovation projects in over a century.

Construction Begins for a Whitehouse Ballroom

Trump announced on Truth Social, “Ground has been broken on the White House to build the new ballroom. I am honored to be the first President to finally get this much-needed project underway — with zero cost to the American taxpayer!” He added that the project is “being privately funded by many generous Patriots, Great American Companies, and, yours truly.”

Plans for the $250 million addition first emerged in July, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirming that the proposed ballroom would span 90,000 square feet and seat up to 650 people.

Whitehouse Ballroom features Bulletproof Glass

Trump said the project would “pay total respect to the existing building” and would be located near, but not attached to, the main structure.

During a July event, Trump said, “In the White House, for 150 years, they’ve wanted to have a ballroom. There’s never been a president that was good at ballrooms. I’m good at building things, and we’re going to build quickly and on time. It’ll be beautiful, top, top of the line.”

The ballroom is expected to include four walls of bulletproof glass and enough space to host up to 1,000 guests—potentially even a presidential inauguration.

Funding Dinner and Corporate Support
Earlier this month, Trump reportedly hosted a private dinner for donors funding the Whitehouse Ballroom. According to Al Jazeera, guests included executives from major companies such as Amazon, Apple, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Palantir, and defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The Winklevoss twins, founders of the cryptocurrency platform Gemini, were also in attendance.

During the dinner, Trump unveiled the construction site to donors, opening the curtains of the East Room to show where the ballroom would rise.

Critics Attack

Despite Trump’s assurances, backlash has been swift. Images of the partial demolition sparked widespread outrage online, with some calling the project a “vanity monument.”

Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh denounced the renovation as “an utter desecration.” Writing on X, he said, “If I ran for President in 2028, I’d run on taking a bulldozer to Trump’s ballroom, an utter desecration of the people’s house.”

Democratic Representative Mark Takano of California proposed legislation to block federal funds for any White House renovations during a government shutdown, which is now in its 20th day.

Human rights lawyer Qasim Rashid added, “Wealth & income inequality is at record highs in America, but glad we’re spending $250m on a vanity project.”

Completion Timeline

For many, the project underscores growing tensions between political spectacle and public service. As The Guardian reported, viral images of the demolition have fueled criticism that the project symbolizes excess and ego rather than heritage and history.

Work began in September and is expected to be completed before the end of Trump’s second term in January 2029. Whether the Whitehouse Ballroom becomes a celebrated addition or a controversial legacy remains to be seen.
