US Mint to Start Producing $1 Coins Featuring Donald Trump

US Mint $1 coin Donald Trump

In a move that has no clear parallel in modern American monetary history, the US Mint will begin striking one-dollar coins bearing the portrait of a sitting president — Donald Trump — on their face. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the announcement Wednesday morning, framing the coin as a celebration of the nation's 250th anniversary and describing it as an embodiment of "the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all."

The coin's reverse side carries the presidential seal with "250" inscribed on the shield, a design that commemorates the semiquincentennial of American independence. Its face carries something far more unusual: the likeness of a living president on official US currency — a practice that federal law has, for well over a century, been broadly understood to prohibit.

The Legal Tightrope the Treasury Is Walking

Placing a living person's image on American currency is not merely unconventional — it runs headlong into a thicket of federal statutes that have governed the design of US money for generations. An 1866 law explicitly prohibits living people from appearing on paper currency, though its precise application to coinage has been debated. When Congress established the Presidential $1 Coin Program in 2007, it went further, mandating that no living president — or any president who had died within the previous two years — could be depicted on those coins.

So how is the Trump dollar coin legal? The Treasury Department's answer points to legislation Trump himself signed in 2020, which authorized the Treasury Secretary to issue dollar coins during the 2026 calendar year bearing designs "emblematic of the United States semiquincentennial." That law prohibits any person, living or dead, from appearing on the coin's reverse side — but does not, by its text, appear to bar a living person from appearing on the obverse face.

Legal researchers at both the Mint and Treasury have formally determined that the proposed coin does not violate existing law, according to a comment from the acting chief of the Mint's Office of Design Management at a January meeting of the Commission of Fine Arts. The Treasury Department directed all legal questions to that determination when contacted for comment Wednesday.

From Both Sides of the Coin to One: A Design Scaled Back

The final design announced Wednesday represents a notable retreat from the original ambition. A draft design obtained by Politico in October 2025 was considerably more aggressive in its iconography: it featured Trump on both sides of the coin — with the reverse depicting him raising his fist in the air above the words "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT," a reference to his defiant gesture following the 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

That design was quietly abandoned. The version being struck replaces the dual-Trump imagery with the presidential seal on the reverse — a more conventional choice that likely reflects both aesthetic feedback and legal caution from within the administration's own counsel offices.

The coins will be composed of non-precious metals with a gold-like finish on the exterior — giving them the appearance of precious metal without the cost. They will be available for purchase in rolls and bags beginning in the fall, the Treasury Department confirmed.

Not the First Attempt — and Not the Last Controversy

The semiquincentennial dollar is not the opening salvo in efforts to place Trump's image on American currency. Earlier this year, figures in Congress and the Treasury floated the idea of creating a $250 bill bearing Trump's likeness — a denomination that would itself be unprecedented in American monetary history. The proposal failed to gain traction even among Republicans on Capitol Hill, who largely did not share the enthusiasm of its proponents.

The $1 coin is the version that survived. Whether it survives legal challenge is a question that advocacy groups and constitutional scholars are already beginning to examine, given the breadth of existing statutory language prohibiting living persons from appearing on US currency — language that the Treasury Department argues does not technically reach this particular coin, but that critics contend reflects a principle the law intended to apply broadly.

Why the Ban on Living Persons Exists at All

The prohibition on placing living people on American currency is not an accident of legislative drafting. It is rooted in a deliberate political philosophy that has governed US monetary design since the post-Civil War era — a recognition that currency is a form of state endorsement and that placing a living leader on money carries connotations of the kind of personality-driven governance that American democratic tradition has historically sought to avoid.

Dictators and monarchs put their faces on their country's coins. Democracies, the principle holds, honor the dead and the institutional — not the living and the political. The Trump dollar coin tests that principle in ways that are unlikely to be resolved by Treasury Department legal memoranda alone.

What Comes Next

The coins are expected to reach the public in the fall of 2026, timed to the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations. Whether they face legal challenge before or after hitting circulation remains to be seen. What is certain is that their release will reignite a debate about the appropriate use of the nation's monetary symbols — and about whether a semiquincentennial coin bearing a sitting president's portrait is a tribute to American values or a departure from them.

For now, the US Mint is preparing its dies. The most controversial dollar coin in American history is on its way to a roll near you.
