Nicolás Maduro was sworn in for a third term as president, six months after a Venezuelan disputed election. The official results of July’s election have been widely rejected by the international community, including neighboring countries Brazil and Colombia.

On Friday, he vowed that his new six-year term would mark a "period of peace." But many recognize Edmundo González, a retired diplomat and political newcomer, as the rightful winner.

González’s Condemnation 

González, who has been acknowledged by countries such as the United States, released a video statement condemning Maduro’s inauguration. He accused Maduro of orchestrating "a coup d'état" to consolidate power and vowed to return to Venezuela "at the right moment."

"I represent the will of nearly eight million Venezuelans and have a duty to defend that mandate," said González. He called on the military to reject what he described as "illegal orders" issued by Maduro’s regime and ensure security for his eventual return.

International and Domestic Turmoil 

 The controversy intensified with the brief arrest of opposition leader María Corina Machado, who was detained after addressing a protest rally.

 González criticized the regime’s actions, stating, “They sought to do to me in the air what they did yesterday to our leader.” He called for military loyalty to the Venezuelan people, emphasizing, “The soldiers of our national armed forces must obey through me, as I am the elected president of the Republic of Venezuela.”

Maduro’s inauguration comes as his government faces significant international pressure. While Venezuela’s National Electoral Council declared him the winner, the U.S. increased its reward for his capture to $25 million. 

Meanwhile, González continues to rally global support, despite an arrest warrant and a $100,000 reward for his detention issued by Maduro’s government.
