The Trump administration quietly warned Iran ahead of a new U.S. naval operation in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, but the message did little to prevent immediate escalation. Within hours of the operation’s launch in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian forces carried out a series of attacks on U.S. Navy ships, commercial vessels, and targets in the United Arab Emirates, igniting fresh tensions across a volatile region already on edge.

WHY IT MATTERS:
A senior Trump administration official directly informed Iran on Sunday about the impending U.S. operation to "guide" ships through the Strait of Hormuz and warned Tehran not to interfere, according to a U.S. official and a source familiar with the matter. The private diplomatic warning signals the White House was attempting to reduce the risk of direct confrontation, even as military pressure in the region intensified.

Despite that message, Iranian forces launched multiple attacks shortly after the operation began.

STATE OF PLAY:
On Tuesday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Dan Caine downplayed the Iranian attacks and insisted the ceasefire remains intact.

However, behind closed doors, some U.S. and Israeli officials reportedly believe President Trump could authorize a renewed military escalation later this week if diplomatic efforts stall.

BEHIND THE SCENES:
The warning tied to "Project Freedom" was delivered Sunday and closely aligned with a Truth Social post Trump published that same evening.

Hegseth emphasized Tuesday that communication channels with Tehran remain active.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly referred Axios to Trump’s Truth Social post and declined further comment.

DRIVING THE NEWS:
On the first day of the operation Monday, Iran carried out multiple strikes targeting U.S. Navy vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, commercial shipping lanes, and locations in the UAE.

Despite the escalation, U.S. officials insisted the situation had not crossed into full conflict.

Despite Washington’s push to stabilize shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, early results have been limited. U.S. Central Command reported only two U.S.-flagged ships passed through on Monday and none on Tuesday.

Hegseth projected optimism about future traffic.
