Yelp Google Lawsuit Revived: Court Backs Antitrust Claim Over Search Monopoly Power

Yelp google lawsuit

The long-running Yelp Google lawsuit took a dramatic turn this week as a California federal judge allowed key antitrust claims to proceed, accusing Google of leveraging its general search monopoly to dominate the local search market and shut out rivals.

In a Wednesday order, U.S. District Judge Susan van Keulen denied Google’s partial motion to dismiss, finding that Yelp’s amended complaint successfully corrected flaws previously identified by the court. The new version zeroes in on Google’s practice of integrating local search results directly into its “OneBox” feature, ensuring users consume Google’s own listings before ever seeing organic or external results.

Court Recognizes Yelp’s “Refined” Theory of Coercion

Judge van Keulen’s order marked a pivotal shift in the high-stakes battle. Yelp alleged that Google tied its general search and local search products, coercing users through design choices that make Google’s local listings unavoidable.

The judge agreed that Yelp’s updated complaint presented a “cognizable” theory of how users are funneled into Google’s ecosystem. The company’s “OneBox” — the prominent feature atop most search pages — allegedly captures user attention and suppresses rival visibility.

Citing data showing 58.5% of U.S. Google searches result in zero clicks, the judge noted it’s reasonable to infer that users’ needs are satisfied within Google’s own interface. “They have already consumed Google’s local search content by design,” the order stated, underscoring Yelp’s argument that Google’s practices stifle competition and consumer choice.

Judge Cites DOJ Case as Critical Precedent

In a crucial connection, the court found that Yelp’s case aligns closely with the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust suit against Google, which established the company’s monopoly power in the general search market.

Judge van Keulen ruled that the DOJ’s findings allow Yelp to invoke a statute of limitations exception, enabling claims based on conduct as far back as 2016. “Although this is a close case,” the judge wrote, “Yelp has shown a real relation between its case and the government’s — an identical antitrust market serves as the foundation.”

Allegations of “Continuing Violations” Through Design Changes

The court also highlighted Yelp’s new evidence of continuing violations, including major design changes to Google’s OneBox in 2016 and 2017 that boosted “zero-click” searches. Yelp further alleged that Google’s 2021 “mega-map” redesign and 2024 AI Overviews continue the pattern by embedding local content directly in search results, effectively trapping users within Google’s own ecosystem.

Judge van Keulen noted that these changes are “just as applicable” to AI Overviews as to OneBox, allowing Yelp’s claims to advance under the continuing violation doctrine.

Yelp Celebrates “Step Toward Accountability”

Yelp’s general counsel Aaron Schur hailed the decision as a “positive step toward holding Google accountable for its illegal exclusionary conduct.”

“We look forward to detailing how Google’s monopoly harms consumers and innovation,” Schur said, emphasizing that Google’s local search dominance limits competition from platforms like Yelp that rely on organic visibility.

Google Faces Renewed Antitrust Scrutiny

Yelp originally filed the lawsuit in August, alleging Google has monopolized the local search and advertising markets by prioritizing its own products — such as Google Maps — over competitors. The complaint builds on years of tension between the two tech giants, dating back to Yelp’s 2014 petition to EU regulators, which helped lead to a €2.4 billion fine against Google for similar conduct in Europe.

While Google’s attorneys argued the case was outdated and duplicative, Judge van Keulen disagreed, noting that recent algorithmic and design shifts kept the alleged conduct “alive and ongoing.”

Representatives for Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday.

Legal Teams and What Comes Next

Yelp is represented by Hausfeld LLP attorneys Sathya Gosselin, Swathi Bojedla, Renner K. Walker, and Joanne Bui.
Google is defended by John E. Schmidtlein and Benjamin M. Greenblum of Williams & Connolly LLP, alongside Amit Gressel and Franklin M. Rubinstein of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati PC.

As the Yelp Google lawsuit moves into discovery, legal observers say it could become one of the most consequential antitrust showdowns of the decade — potentially reshaping how tech giants control the flow of online information and consumer choice.
