AOC Thrashed In Vote By Fellow Democrats

Alexandria Ocacio-Cortez

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is facing her comeuppance after rallying against fellow Democrats in primaries in favor of more progressive opponents.

It also comes days after the firebrand 30-year-old representative said that her Party needs new leadership, a reference to House Speaker and California Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader and New York Sen. Charles Schumer among others.

After a secret ballot she lost her chance at a spot on the prestigious House Energy and Commerce Committee, as her colleagues cast an overwhelming vote, 46 – 13, for her fellow New York Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice.

During a video call before the vote her fellow Democrats took her apart after her comments on new leadership and a feud with Sen. Joe Manchin.

“I'm taking into account who works against other members in primaries and who doesn't,” Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat whose opponent, Jessica Cisneros, was backed by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, said.

Her fight with Sen. Manchin has gone on for weeks with the West Virginia Senator saying “She’s more active on Twitter than anything else.”

“I find it amusing when politicians try to diminish the seriousness of our policy work, movement organizing and grassroots fundraising to ‘she just tweets,’ as though ‘serious’ politics is only done by begging corporate CEOs for money through wax-sealed envelopes delivered by raven,” a furious Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said.

But it was likely her comments this week, calling for new leadership in her Party, that likely cost her the spot.

“You know, for me personally it was when I was waitressing, and I would hear Democrats talk about why the Affordable Care Act was so amazing all the time and how this is the greatest thing ever, and the economy was doing wonderfully,” she said. “And frankly, it is the same trick that Trump pulls, which is, you know, people touting the Dow as a measure of economic success, when we're all getting killed out here.”

“And so, you know, do we need new leadership of the Democratic Party? Absolutely,” she said. “But how do we ensure that when we shift, we don't even move further to the right?”
