New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who at one time was hailed by the mainstream media as the king of the coronavirus response in the United States, is now facing calls to resign.

The calls are coming from both Republicans and Democrats after one of the governor’s aides admitted that the governor’s office intentionally hid data about deaths from the virus in the state’s nursing homes, The Daily Mail reported.

On Friday, 14 Democrat state senators released a joint statement calling for the governor’s emergency powers that he was given during the pandemic to be revoked.

“While Covid-19 has tested the limits of our people and state … it is clear that the expanded emergency powers granted to the governor are no longer appropriate,” they said.

Numerous Republicans joined in the chorus and have called for the governor to be removed or to resign.

"For over six months, day after day, in briefing after briefing, Governor Cuomo stood before New Yorkers and lied about his directive that contributed to the deaths of thousands of seniors,” Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro said. “In the coming days he will cynically try to convince us that it was for our own good — that it was someone else's fault. This is another lie. What is true, is Andrew Cuomo has proved himself unworthy of our trust, and unfit for public office."

“Prosecution and impeachment discussions must begin right away,” GOP Chair Nick Langworthy said. “If the Governor is involved, he should be immediately removed from office.”

State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt. And Rep. Tom Reed asked other members of Congress to demand “an independent and thorough investigation by the Biden Department of Justice into Governor Cuomo and New York State.”

Cuomo’s aide Melissa DeRosa was the one who exposed the scandal inadvertently on a call with fellow Democrats where she, likely, thought she was safe.

The governor’s office said no to a legislative request for the information in August because “right around the same time, [then-President Donald Trump] turns this into a giant political football,” she said.

“He starts tweeting that we killed everyone in nursing homes,” she said. “He starts going after [New Jersey Gov. Phil] Murphy, starts going after [California Gov. Gavin] Newsom, starts going after [Michigan Gov.] Gretchen Whitmer.”

She said that part of what directed their decision, in addition to former President Trump going after his fellow Democrat governors, he “directs the Department of Justice to do an investigation into us.”

“And basically, we froze,” she said to the legislators on the call.

“Because then we were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation,” she said. “That played a very large role into this.”

But on Friday she backtracked.

“We informed the houses [of the New York legislature] of this at the time. We were comprehensive and transparent in our responses to the DoJ and then had to immediately focus our resources on the second wave and vaccine rollout,” she said.
