Derek Chauvin, the ex-Minneapolis police officer convicted in the murder of George Floyd, was viciously attacked in prison. The assault occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time on Friday.  Chauvin was seriously injured by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution, in Tucson, Arizona. 

Tucson is a medium-security prison that houses 380 inmates. 

This incident marks the second high-profile attack on a federal prisoner within the last five months, following the stabbing of disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar in July at a federal penitentiary in Florida.

 Moreover, it is the second major security breach at the Tucson federal prison in just over a year, with a prior incident involving an inmate attempting to shoot a visitor.

In 2019, high-profile inmate financier Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide while in custody prior to going on trial.

Reports suggest that the facility has been grappling with security lapses and staffing shortages, contributing to an environment where incidents like this can occur. The attacker's identity remains undisclosed, and the motive behind the assault is yet to be determined.

Derek Chauvin, aged 47, had been transferred to FCI Tucson from a maximum-security Minnesota state prison in August 2022. 

This move was part of his concurrent sentences – a 21-year federal term for violating George Floyd’s civil rights and a 22½-year state sentence for second-degree murder. Chauvin's lawyer, Eric Nelson, had advocated for keeping him out of the general population, citing concerns for his safety.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the former policeman’s appeal of the murder conviction. 

His attorneys are trying to overturn his federal guilty plea based on new evidence he claims exonerates him from causing Floyd's death.

The tragic death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, triggered global protests against police brutality and racism after Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Floyd's neck for 9½ minutes. Floyd's dying cries of "I can't breathe" were captured in a bystander video, leading to a national reckoning on these critical issues.

The Bureau of Prisons acknowledged the assault, claiming that responding staff promptly contained the situation and administered life-saving measures before transporting the injured inmate to a hospital for further evaluation.

Investigations ongoing

 The FBI has been notified, and an investigation is underway. Currently, no visitors are allowed at the facility until the inquiry is complete.

An ongoing AP investigation has revealed deep-seated issues within the Bureau of Prisons, including rampant sexual abuse by staff, escapes, chronic violence, and severe staffing shortages.

 Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters, appointed last year to reform the agency, has faced criticism for delays in providing information to lawmakers and challenges in addressing fundamental operational questions.

As the investigation into Derek Chauvin's stabbing unfolds, it adds to the urgency for comprehensive reforms within the Bureau of Prisons. Critics are claiming that the safety and security of all inmates, regardless of their notoriety is at risk and there are systemic challenges plaguing the nation's largest law enforcement agency.
