More Americans Now Likely to Frown Upon Drinking in Moderation

The dangers of consuming too much alcohol in one sitting are very well-documented. This can cause issues with hand-eye coordination and lead to impaired judgment, especially while around others.

Habitual over-drinkers may eventually suffer damage to the immune system, making their bodies more vulnerable to various diseases. Other risks include developing cancer and incurring brain damage and/or lasting injury to the nervous system.

Traditionally, individuals who consume alcohol are advised to do so in moderation. However, a new study indicates more people are beginning to see even "moderate" drinking as a liability.

This data from Gallup might shock you

In 2024, 45% of people now believe consuming even one to two alcoholic beverages (widely considered moderate drinking) is not healthy. This marks a notable shift from 2018 when only 28% of Americans viewed this amount of drinking as ill-advised.

Today, only 8% think it's healthy to have one to two drinks per day. Another 43% feel that consuming alcohol in moderation ultimately doesn't make a tangible difference.

Across age demographics, 65% of folks between the ages of 18 and 35 perceive mild drinking as harmful. However, for people ages 35 to 54, just 37% believe it's not healthy to ingest alcohol with temperance. When surveying individuals 55 and up, 39% told Gallup it's not good to have only one to two alcoholic beverages in a day.

Further details from the pollster likewise confirm that fewer Americans today are drinking than in years past.

Enjoy other beverages without the risks of alcohol consumption

Despite the longstanding popularity of recreational drinking, it's not without its hazards. Club soda, sparkling water, and mocktails are all better alternatives to alcoholic beverages.

These tasty drinks don't come with the downsides of beer, wine, or other similar spirits. Nonalcoholic wines, ciders, and beers can also be safely consumed by people who don't want to limit themselves to juices or sodas.

If you are someone who enjoys alcoholic beverages on occasion, you should take certain precautions. Don't drink on an empty stomach, as this can make it harder for your body to properly metabolize the alcohol. To exert further vigilance, let at least one to two hours pass before consuming a second or third drink.
