Dynamic Aerostructures files for bankruptcy

Dynamic Aerostructures LLC, a major aerospace parts supplier to industry giants Lockheed Martin and Boeing, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing financial turbulence and manufacturing inconsistencies that disrupted its operations. The Los Angeles-based company, along with affiliates Dynamic Aerostructures Intermediate LLC and Forrest Machining LLC, reported debts ranging between $50 million and $100 million in a filing submitted Wednesday.

The bankruptcy move signals a critical moment for the company, which has long played a vital role in the aerospace supply chain but now faces a turbulent descent.

The Downward Spiral: Quality Control Woes and Stop-Work Orders

CEO Eric N. Ellis outlined the company’s struggles in a first-day declaration, revealing that persistent "manufacturing practice inconsistencies" led to legacy quality control issues. In an attempt to mitigate the damage, Dynamic Aerostructures self-reported the concerns to its clients and invested significant time and resources into rectifying them.

However, the fallout was immediate. Some major customers, including key defense contractors, responded with temporary stop-work orders. These interruptions proved devastating, slashing the company’s profit margins and further tightening its financial straits.

Bank Defaults and a Race Against the Clock

The company’s financial troubles escalated when its prepetition lender, BMO Harris Bank NA, issued default notices in late 2023 and again in April 2024. The notices pointed to violations of a $51.5 million prepetition credit agreement, originally signed in July 2021, due to missed interest payments and other financial breaches.

Faced with dwindling cash flow and mounting pressure from creditors, Dynamic Aerostructures began actively marketing its assets in May 2024. The company aims to secure a winning bidder by mid-April, marking a desperate push to salvage its operations through a sale.

Revenue Holds, But Uncertainty Looms

Despite its financial woes, Dynamic Aerostructures generated over $51 million in revenue in 2023 and slightly surpassed that figure in 2024. Yet, even with steady revenue, the weight of operational missteps, customer concerns, and creditor demands proved too heavy to sustain.

Founded in 1978, the company has long been a trusted manufacturer of aerospace and defense components. Now under the ownership of private equity firm Endeavour Capital, it finds itself battling for survival.

What’s Next? The Fate of Dynamic Aerostructures

With assets valued between $10 million and $50 million and a creditor list of up to 100 entities, the company's restructuring process will be closely watched. The upcoming asset sale could determine whether Dynamic Aerostructures continues in some form or fades into the growing list of aerospace suppliers that have struggled to navigate an increasingly volatile industry.
