Daylight Saving Time Ends: How to Help Your Body Adjust to the Fall Back on November 2

Saving Daylight 2

As Daylight Saving Time comes to an end on Sunday, November 2, at 2 a.m., Americans will “fall back” one hour. We will be gaining a little extra sleep but also throwing our internal clocks for a loop. The change marks the transition to lighter mornings and darker evenings, a shift designed to make better use of natural daylight as winter approaches. But according to sleep experts, the one-hour difference isn’t as simple for your body as it sounds.

“Quality sleep comes from consistency, not just a few extra minutes in bed,” says Dr. William Lu, Medical Director for Dreem Health. “That extra hour might not translate to feeling more rested, unless your routine and environment support good sleep.”

The Origins of Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time (DST) began more than a century ago as a way to conserve energy and maximize daylight during longer summer days. The idea is often credited to Benjamin Franklin, who suggested adjusting sleep schedules to make better use of daylight in a 1784 essay.

The U.S. formally adopted DST in the 20th century, though its relevance and effects continue to spark debate each year.

When DST ends, the mornings become brighter and the evenings darker — a welcome change for some but a disruption for others. While gaining an extra hour sounds like a bonus, experts say your circadian rhythm, the internal clock that regulates sleep and alertness, doesn’t reset instantly.

“Our circadian rhythm is guided by light and dark cues, not the time on the clock,” Dr. Lu explains. “So even though it’s 7:00 a.m. on your phone, your body still feels like it’s 8:00 a.m. for a few days.”

3 Common Issues Your Body May Face Adjusting to Daylight Saving Time

  1. You Wake Up Earlier
According to Harvard Health, many people find themselves waking up earlier than usual the day after the clock change. The internal clock remains slightly off balance, resulting in lighter, fragmented sleep.
  2. You May Have Trouble Falling Asleep
As evenings grow darker earlier, your body produces melatonin, the sleep hormone, sooner than usual. The mismatch between your internal rhythm and the clock can make it difficult to fall asleep at your normal bedtime.
  3. You Wake More During the Night
Your internal rhythm’s disruption can lead to more nighttime awakenings or restlessness. Dr. Lu recommends maintaining a consistent bedtime and keeping your sleep environment calm to help your body recalibrate.

Tips for Resetting Your Sleep Cycle

Dr. Lu advises embracing natural light to help your internal clock adjust.

“Natural light is the most powerful signal for your circadian rhythm,” he says. “Even 15–30 minutes of sunlight can make a big difference in how alert you feel during the day and how easily you fall asleep that night.”

He also cautions against oversleeping:

“Sleeping in can confuse your body’s rhythm even more. Staying on your normal schedule helps your internal clock sync up faster.”

Getting outside for some morning sunlight and maintaining a steady bedtime routine are simple yet effective strategies to ease the transition.

Embrace the Change

Though the shift in Daylight Saving Time may briefly leave you groggy or out of sync, small adjustments can help you feel refreshed and ready for the shorter days ahead. So, as the clocks fall back, take advantage of brighter mornings, cozy evenings, and that symbolic “extra hour” to rest — and reset.
