The EPA gasoline sales expansion is poised to reshape the fuel landscape this summer, as federal officials move to loosen restrictions on higher-ethanol gasoline in a bid to counter rising prices at the pump.

On Wednesday, Lee Zeldin announced that the Environmental Protection Agency will allow expanded sales of E15 gasoline—fuel blended with up to 15% ethanol—during the warmer months, when it is typically restricted.

Balancing Costs and Air Quality

E15 fuel has long faced seasonal limits because it evaporates more easily in high temperatures, contributing to air pollution. Yet it also offers a financial advantage for drivers, who can save between 10 and 40 cents per gallon, according to the Renewable Fuels Association.

The policy shift reflects a delicate balancing act—like opening a pressure valve on a system under strain—between environmental concerns and economic relief.

Driving the Decision

Speaking at the CERAWeek energy conference, Zeldin framed the decision as a strategy to stabilize supply and reduce dependence on foreign oil.

The waiver, he said, will “ensure a robustly available supply of domestic fuel,” offering Americans relief as prices climb and global energy markets remain volatile.

In addition to expanding E15 availability, the agency plans to remove federal barriers to the nationwide sale of E10 gasoline, which contains 10% ethanol and is already widely used.

Rising Prices Add Urgency

The announcement comes as fuel costs surge. According to the AAA, the national average price of gasoline reached $3.98 per gallon on Wednesday—more than $1 higher than just a month earlier.

This is not the first time federal officials have turned to ethanol blends as a stopgap. Similar waivers were issued last year under the Trump administration and in 2022 by President Joe Biden during a period of rising fuel costs.

Industry Applauds the Move

The ethanol sector, which has long pushed for year-round E15 sales, welcomed the decision.

Geoff Cooper praised the administration’s swift action, pointing to global instability as a key factor.

“With geopolitical conflict roiling energy markets worldwide,” he said, the move could help prevent shortages and keep prices in check during peak summer demand.
