Appeals Court Revives Palestinian Authority $656 Million Judgment

palestinian authority $656 million judgment

In a dramatic legal reversal, a federal appeals court has reinstated the palestinian authority $656 million judgment, breathing new life into a long-running case tied to deadly attacks in Israel that left American victims seeking justice.

The decision marks a pivotal turn—one shaped by the force of a recent Supreme Court ruling and years of legal uncertainty that once threatened to bury the case for good.

A Decade-Long Legal Battle Reignited

The ruling by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes nearly ten years after the same court had thrown out the original verdict against the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority.

At that time, judges concluded that U.S. courts lacked jurisdiction over foreign entities for attacks carried out abroad—especially when those attacks were not directly aimed at the United States.

That decision had effectively erased a massive jury award, leaving victims’ families in limbo.

Supreme Court Shift Changes the Landscape

The legal tide shifted last June when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a 2019 law passed by Congress, clearing a path for such lawsuits to proceed.

The law was designed specifically to allow American victims of overseas attacks to seek damages from entities like the PLO and the Palestinian Authority.

Armed with that precedent, the appeals court revisited the case—and this time, reached a very different conclusion.

Judges Cite Clear Direction

In their March 30 decision, appellate judges stated plainly that reinstating the original award aligns with the Supreme Court’s directive.

“We conclude that the original judgment for the plaintiffs should be reinstated,” the court wrote, underscoring that its decision follows the “plain import” of the high court’s ruling.

The language signals not just compliance, but a firm endorsement of the legal framework now supporting such claims.

Families React: ‘A Long Wait for Justice’

For the families of Americans killed or wounded in the attacks, the ruling lands like a long-delayed verdict finally echoing through the halls of justice.

Attorney Kent Yalowitz said his clients were deeply relieved.

“They have been waiting for a very long time for justice to be done,” he said in a statement, noting that the court reinstated the judgment without requiring a new trial.

A Case That Could Reshape Legal Boundaries

The reinstatement of the palestinian authority $656 million judgment does more than revive a single case—it redraws the boundaries of accountability in international terrorism litigation.

Like a door once firmly shut now forced open, the ruling could influence how U.S. courts handle similar claims involving foreign entities and overseas attacks.

For now, the decision stands as a powerful signal: legal battles thought lost can return, reshaped by evolving laws and the persistence of those seeking justice.
