INDIO, Calif. — Sabrina Carpenter took the desert main stage just after 9 p.m. Friday night and officially opened the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, launching the pop star’s much-anticipated headlining debut at the sold-out festival and kicking off a three-day weekend that will also see Justin Bieber and Colombian superstar Karol G cap the main stage — with Karol G making history as the first Latina artist ever to headline Coachella.

The festival, which sold out in less than a week when tickets went on sale last fall, returns for its 25th edition with a lineup that crosses pop, reggaeton, K-pop and electronic music, and that organizers say skews younger and more global than any previous edition. Weekend one runs through Sunday, April 12, with an identical lineup scheduled to repeat for weekend two from April 17 to 19.

Sabrina Carpenter Opens The Festival

For Carpenter, 26, the Friday night slot represents the biggest stage of a career that has rocketed skyward since her 2024 breakthrough album propelled her from Disney Channel alum to Grammy-winning pop A-lister. She opened the set in a glittering gold two-piece under a cascade of confetti, launching into her signature single “Espresso” before running through a roughly 90-minute set that spanned her discography and included a pair of special guests whose identities were kept under wraps until the moment they appeared.

The crowd — estimated by festival staff at roughly 125,000 on the festival grounds — sang every word. Social media lit up immediately after the opening notes, with “Sabrina at Coachella” trending worldwide on X within minutes of the set’s start.

“This is the biggest night of my life,” Carpenter told the crowd midway through her set. “Thank you for making me feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”

Justin Bieber Returns

Saturday night will belong to Justin Bieber, who headlines a Coachella main stage for the first time in his career after more than 15 years as one of the most commercially dominant pop artists on the planet. Bieber, 32, is expected to take the stage at 11:25 p.m. and is reportedly planning a set packed with both new material and a nostalgic trip through the hits that defined his career — from “Baby” to “Sorry” to “Peaches.”

The booking is something of a comeback moment for the Canadian superstar, who in recent years has stepped back from touring to focus on his family and on what he has publicly described as his mental health. Bieber’s return to a stage the size of Coachella — watched live by well over 100,000 fans on the ground and a livestream audience likely numbering in the tens of millions — is expected to be among the weekend’s most talked-about moments.

Karol G Makes History

Sunday night belongs to Karol G, who will close out the weekend with a 9:55 p.m. set and in doing so become the first Latina artist to ever headline the Coachella main stage. The Medellín-born superstar has spent the past several years building what many in the Latin music industry describe as the most commercially successful run by any female Latin artist in history, headlining stadiums from Madrid to Mexico City and breaking streaming records across Spanish-speaking markets.

“This is not just my moment, it is our moment — for every little Latina girl who ever dreamed of standing on the biggest stage in the world,” Karol G told Billboard in an interview published this week. “We are not the opening act anymore. We are the headliner.”

Industry analysts see her Sunday set as a watershed moment for the growing influence of Latin pop in the American mainstream, a shift that has been years in the making but is now unmistakably visible at the genre’s most high-profile stages.

A Deeper Lineup Than Ever

Beyond the three headliners, this year’s Coachella lineup is stacked top to bottom with international stars. Electronic music duo Anyma debuts a new conceptual project called &Aelig;den on the Sahara Tent stage, Korean girl group Katseye makes its Coachella debut, and the undercard includes performances from rising names across Afrobeats, hyperpop, corridos tumbados and drum-and-bass.

Festival organizers say this year’s edition has the youngest average attendee in Coachella’s history, with more than half of ticket holders under 25. That demographic shift has been reflected in the lineup itself, which leans heavily on artists whose careers have been built primarily on TikTok, streaming, and short-form video — a clear break from the indie rock and alternative roots of the festival’s earlier years.

Livestream And Viewing Options

For fans not making the trip to the Southern California desert, Coachella 2026 will be livestreamed free on the festival’s official YouTube channel, with multiple camera angles and dedicated streams for the main stage, Sahara, Outdoor Theatre and Gobi tents. The livestream, which has become a cultural event in its own right in recent years, is expected to draw a global viewership well into the tens of millions across both weekends.

What It Means For Americans

Coachella has long functioned as a cultural snapshot of where American pop music is heading — which artists are ascending, which are on the decline, and which international scenes are breaking through to the mainstream. This year’s festival, with its mix of a crossover pop queen in Carpenter, a returning superstar in Bieber, and a history-making Latina headliner in Karol G, is arguably the clearest statement yet that the boundaries between American pop and global pop have effectively dissolved.

For the hundreds of thousands of fans in Indio and the tens of millions watching from home, the next three nights promise to be a reminder of why, a quarter century after its founding, Coachella remains the single most influential music festival in the United States — and one of a handful anywhere in the world where a single set can launch, revive, or redefine a career overnight.

USA Herald will be covering the festival throughout the weekend.
