In a dramatic turn of events, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) support staff reached a labor agreement with the district early Tuesday morning, just hours before a strike was set to commence. This last-minute deal ensures that schools will remain open for nearly 400,000 students, averting a potential crisis for families across the city.

Key Gains for School Workers

The tentative agreement, announced by SEIU Local 99, highlights significant victories for school workers during a contentious negotiation period. Notably, the deal includes a staggering 24% wage increase for union members and the cancellation of recent layoff notices for hundreds of information technology workers. While LAUSD confirmed the agreement’s fundamental details are still being finalized, the outcome marks a pivotal moment in labor relations within the district.

Earlier in the weekend, LAUSD had also secured agreements with its teachers’ and principals’ unions, signaling a concerted effort to stabilize the educational environment. “Our commitments reflect the dedication of our entire workforce,” said Andrés Chait, acting superintendent, in a statement. “We are grateful for the collaboration that made this possible and hopeful that this marks a new chapter of partnership.”

A Ticking Clock

The urgency of the situation was underscored by the unions’ ultimatum, which set an April 14 deadline for reaching an agreement or face a walkout. A simultaneous strike involving all three unions would have shuttered schools and disrupted education for countless students, leaving families scrambling for childcare solutions.
