The Permian Extinction. The "Great Dying." The single most devastating extinction event in Earth's known history, wiping out 96% of all marine species in what scientists have long attributed to volcanic greenhouse gas emissions and runaway global warming.

But Loeb asks the question that no one in mainstream science wants to touch: What if it wasn't volcanic? What if it was technological?

What if a pre-human civilization — advanced, space-capable, and careless with its atmosphere, much like we are today — triggered its own extinction through industrial-scale climate destruction?

He writes that he would have used such a machine himself — to go back and stop the Holocaust, which claimed 65 members of his father's family in Nazi concentration camps. His grandfather, Albert Loeb — the man Avi is named after — was wise enough to flee Germany in 1936. Others in his family believed their German patriotism would protect them.

It didn't.
