Murdaugh trial insiders react after explosive court ruling By Tylor Brooks | USA Herald

The South Carolina Supreme Court upended the legal world on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, by completely overturning the 2023 double-murder convictions of disgraced former attorney Richard "Alex" Murdaugh. Citing breathtaking jury tampering by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill, the high court ordered a completely new trial for the deaths of Murdaugh's wife, Maggie, and adult son, Paul. The bombshell ruling has sent shockwaves through the community, sparking visceral reactions of anger, numbness, and relief from the insiders who lived through the initial six-week legal circus.

Juror expresses fury over overturned verdict

For the citizens who spent weeks listening to gruesome testimony, the high court's decision feels like a betrayal of their civic sacrifice. At least one prominent member of the original jury expressed immediate anger and disbelief regarding the insinuation that the panel lacked impartiality during deliberations.

"I couldn't believe the ruling," juror Amie Williams stated plainly following the announcement. "I'm in shock. It's unbelievable. I wasn't influenced. How can you say the jury was influenced? It made me angry."

Williams, who later co-authored a book detailing her experience behind the scenes of the trial, voiced steep skepticism that the state could ever successfully assemble an unbiased panel for a second round of litigation. Because the sprawling true-crime saga captured global headlines, she fears that finding local citizens who have not already formed a rigid opinion on Murdaugh's guilt will prove nearly impossible.

Former ally stunned by clerk's 'disgraceful' actions

The decision centers heavily on the behavior of Becky Hill, the former clerk of court accused of placing her fingers on the scales of justice by making biased, improper comments to jurors to secure a guilty verdict. Hill's subsequent downward spiral included a public admission of plagiarism regarding her insider book, followed by an unrelated criminal indictment and subsequent guilty plea.

Neil Gordon, Hill's former co-author and friend, admitted that while the legal mechanics of the Supreme Court's ruling did not completely surprise him, the reality of the situation left him emotionally frozen.

"I'm numb and cannot believe her lack of good judgment in so many areas, including her apparent jury tampering," Gordon revealed. He added that his primary hope moving forward is that the inevitable retrial is moved as far from Walterboro as possible to keep the media circus out of the local community.

Defense claims victory for constitutional rights

Unsurprisingly, Murdaugh’s defense attorneys, James Griffin and Richard Harpootlian, praised the high court for strictly adhering to the rule of law. They emphasized that their client has vehemently maintained his innocence since the June 2021 shootings at the family's hunting estate.

The legal team noted that Murdaugh is immensely relieved to temporarily shed the label of a convicted murderer while they prepare to battle the state's prosecution team once more.

Even some of Murdaugh's fiercest courtroom adversaries agreed with the ruling, noting that constitutional protections cannot be ignored simply because a case is high-profile or a defendant is widely despised. Attorneys Eric Bland and Ronnie Richter, who represented several of Murdaugh's financial victims, noted that justice must function properly even for the most unpopular figures in society.

Housekeeper warns against forgetting the true victims

While the legal community debates constitutional standards and Netflix prepares a fast-turnaround docuseries on the dramatic reversal, those closest to the Murdaugh family are mourning a reopened wound. For former family housekeeper Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson, the focus must remain tightly locked on the two lives lost.

"What I want people to know is that, yes, this is going to reopen old wounds," Turrubiate-Simpson warned. "But I want people to remember that the victims in all of this were Maggie and Paul. And I don't want them forgotten because Alex Murdaugh is back on trial."

What lies ahead for Alex Murdaugh

While Murdaugh's murder convictions are officially erased from his record, the former legal scion will not walk free anytime soon. He continues to serve extensive prison time for a mountain of financial crimes, insurance fraud schemes, and tax evasion charges that remain entirely unaffected by this ruling.

A definitive timeline, venue, and judge for the impending double-murder retrial have not yet been established by state officials.
