A shocking Murder-for-hire case that spanned multiple states has concluded with a Kentucky judge sentencing a Napa Valley man to life in prison for the 2022 killing of Michael Harding.

Prosecutors said the murder was the result of a carefully orchestrated plot involving Thomas O’Donnell and his romantic partner, Julie Harding, who allegedly wanted her estranged husband dead amid contentious divorce proceedings.

The sentence was handed down in Cumberland County, Kentucky, after a jury found O’Donnell guilty of murder for luring Michael Harding to an isolated property and fatally shooting him.

Jury Convicts Thomas O’Donnell of Murder-for-Hire

Following a trial that included testimony from investigators, forensic experts, and family members, a Cumberland County jury convicted Thomas O'Donnell of murder in connection with the death of Michael Harding.

According to prosecutors, O’Donnell persuaded Harding to travel to a vacant home in Burkesville, Kentucky, by posing as a customer in need of HVAC services. Once Harding arrived at the remote location, he was ambushed and killed.

Jurors reportedly deliberated for only about two hours before returning a guilty verdict.

The conviction marked the culmination of a lengthy investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies and extensive digital evidence.

Judge Murder-for-Hire “Cold-Blooded”

During sentencing, Cumberland County Circuit Judge David Williams described the killing as one of the most disturbing crimes he had encountered during decades in the legal profession.

“I practiced law for 45 years. This is one of the most cold-blooded, heinous acts I’ve ever seen anybody commit,” Williams said during the hearing.

The judge said victim impact statements from Harding’s relatives highlighted the devastating emotional consequences of the crime.

Williams also criticized O’Donnell for failing to accept responsibility for the killing.

“Maybe you’ll have time to accept your actions,” the judge told him before imposing a life sentence.

The judge further remarked that he would not have been surprised if the defendant had received the death penalty had the case qualified as a capital offense under Kentucky law.

Trial Evidence Includes Cellphone Records

Prosecutors built their case around a combination of cellphone records, DNA evidence, and text messages.

Investigators alleged that O’Donnell used a prepaid cellphone to communicate with Harding and lure him to the isolated property on Glasgow Road in Burkesville.

According to testimony from Elizabeth Wheeler, Harding exchanged messages with the prepaid phone shortly before arriving at the scene.

One text sent by Harding reportedly stated, “35 minutes out.”

The response read, “No worries.”

Additional messages suggested the two parties were coordinating Harding’s arrival at the property.

Prosecutors argued that records showed the prepaid phone frequently traveled alongside O’Donnell’s personal cellphone during trips between California, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

Those records ultimately placed O’Donnell near the crime scene on the day of the murder.
