Josh Duggar remains behind bars after a federal judge denied his request to vacate his conviction for possessing child sexual abuse material. The former reality television personality has also been transferred to a different federal prison facility in Texas.

The latest developments mark another setback for the former 19 Kids and Counting star, who is serving a sentence of more than 12 years following his 2021 conviction.

Duggar's legal efforts to overturn his conviction were rejected by a federal judge, who ruled that the appeal was filed too late. He also found Duggar's account of how the paperwork was submitted to be unconvincing.

At the same time, federal prison records show that Duggar has been relocated from a minimum-security prison to a federal medical center.

Federal Judge Rejects Appeal

According to court records, U.S. District Judge Timothy L. Brooks denied Duggar's motion to vacate his conviction, citing procedural issues related to filing deadlines.

Duggar argued that his constitutional rights had been violated and sought relief from his conviction. However, the court determined that his filing arrived after the legal deadline had passed.

The timing of the filing became a central issue in the case. One copy of the appeal reportedly reached the U.S. Attorney's Office on July 29, 2025, more than a month after the deadline. Another copy was not received by the court until August of that year.

Duggar attempted to invoke the federal "prison mailbox rule," a legal doctrine that allows incarcerated individuals to meet filing deadlines if legal documents are deposited into the prison mailing system on or before the due date.

Additional information about federal filing procedures can be found through the U.S. Courts website: United States Courts.

Judge Questions Josh Duggar Account of Events

Judge Brooks ultimately rejected Duggar's argument, concluding that the former reality star failed to provide sufficient evidence that he qualified for protection under the prison mailbox rule.

In his ruling, Brooks wrote that Duggar's explanation of how the documents were mailed and processed was not credible. The judge suggested that the series of events described by Duggar would require an unlikely chain of mishaps and coincidences.

The ruling represented a significant defeat for Duggar's legal team, as it effectively ended another avenue for challenging his conviction.

Court records and federal case information can be accessed through PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records).

Josh Duggar Transfer to Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth

Separate from the legal proceedings, Duggar has been transferred within the federal prison system.

Records from the Federal Bureau of Prisons indicate that Duggar was moved on May 29 from Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Seagoville, a minimum-security facility located near Dallas, to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Fort Worth.

Duggar had been housed at FCI Seagoville since June 2022. The Bureau of Prisons declined to publicly disclose the reason for the transfer, citing security and privacy concerns.

Federal Medical Centers are specialized institutions within the Bureau of Prisons system that provide medical, dental, and mental health services to inmates who require additional care. FMC Fort Worth is classified as an administrative-security federal medical center and includes a detention facility.

More information about FMC facilities is available through the Federal Bureau of Prisons Medical Centers Overview.

Notable Inmates at FMC Fort Worth

Duggar's transfer has drawn attention because FMC Fort Worth houses several high-profile inmates.

Among them is Joe Exotic, whose legal name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage. Exotic gained international notoriety through the Netflix documentary series Tiger King.

He is currently serving a 21-year federal sentence after being convicted in connection with a murder-for-hire plot targeting animal rights activist Carole Baskin. Exotic has also publicly discussed his ongoing battle with prostate cancer while incarcerated.

While there is no indication that Duggar and Exotic have interacted, the two men are now housed at the same federal institution.

Josh Duggar Conviction and Expected Release Date

Duggar was convicted in December 2021 on charges involving the receipt and possession of child sexual abuse material. The conviction followed a highly publicized federal investigation and trial that attracted widespread media attention due to Duggar's previous fame as a member of the Duggar family featured on the TLC reality series 19 Kids and Counting.

In 2022, he was sentenced to approximately 12.5 years in federal prison.

According to Bureau of Prisons records, Duggar's projected release date is currently February 2033, though release dates can change based on various factors within the federal prison system.

For information about reporting abuse or finding support services, resources are available through the Crisis Text Line and the RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network).
