Alaska Plane Crash Near Remote Radar Site Claims All Eight Lives Aboard

Alaska plane crash

A routine flight to one of Alaska's loneliest outposts turned catastrophic Thursday, when a civilian-contracted aircraft went down near a remote U.S. Air Force radar installation, killing everyone on board. The military confirmed all eight people aboard died in the crash.

Where and When the Crash Happened

The plane went down shortly after midday local time — 20:00 GMT — near Cape Newenham, a stretch of southwestern Alaska coastline that hosts the airport serving a long-range radar site. The remoteness of the location, typical of the region's scattered military infrastructure, added urgency and difficulty to the response that followed.

Who Was on Board

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirmed two of its own employees were among those aboard the flight. Beyond that, the identities and purpose of the remaining passengers weren't immediately disclosed, though officials offered a broad sense of who they were.

Military Leaders Mourn the Loss

Lt. Gen. Robert Davis, chief of the U.S. Air Force Alaskan Command, described those killed as "dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment" — language that framed the tragedy not as an isolated accident, but as the loss of people actively serving a broader mission in one of the country's harshest operating landscapes.

"This is a devastating loss for our military family and the communities we serve," Davis said in a statement, adding that the command's focus has shifted entirely toward supporting those left behind. "Our absolute priority right now is providing unwavering support to their families, friends and teammates during this devastating time," he said, while also expressing gratitude for the search and recovery teams who responded swiftly despite the punishing conditions.

The Flight's Final Journey

According to the U.S. Air Force Alaskan Command, the aircraft originally departed from Anchorage International Airport, bound for Cape Newenham — a site situated roughly 450 miles west by air, a distance that underscores just how isolated the destination truly is.

No Survivors Found

Rescue teams who reached the crash site on the ground confirmed grimly that there were no survivors. An investigation into the crash is now underway, and officials said the names of those killed would be released only once their next of kin had been formally notified — a standard but somber protocol following military and contractor fatalities.

Piecing Together Who Was Aboard

The flight had been chartered by the Army Corps of Engineers, which confirmed Friday that two of its employees were among the passengers — worth noting, since the vast majority of the Corps' workforce consists of civilian employees rather than enlisted military personnel.

Additional Details From Federal Investigators

Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board's chief for its Alaska region, told CBS News — the BBC's American news partner — that the flight carried two pilots and six passengers, offering the clearest breakdown yet of who exactly was aboard when the aircraft went down.

The Site's Strategic Role

Cape Newenham, positioned along Alaska's southwestern coast, forms part of the Alaska Radar System — a network of remote installations tasked with monitoring aircraft approaching or operating within Alaskan airspace, a critical layer of the region's broader air defense infrastructure.
