WASHINGTON - The Tetris Company has distanced itself from the Trump White House’s new “Build the Wall” browser game, warning that it takes copyright infringement seriously after the administration unveiled a block-stacking challenge built around its border-security message.

The company’s response introduces a potential intellectual property dispute into the White House’s latest effort to promote presidential policies through popular entertainment. Tetris has said it is reviewing the matter, according to The Independent’s reporting. That leaves open the possibility for legal action.

The White House launched its online arcade Thursday, September 3. Its official arcade page currently lists five playable games and a sixth slot marked “Coming Soon.”

Among them, Build the Wall instructs visitors to “Protect the border from the coming horde.” The game pairs falling geometric blocks with a border-barrier objective and the subtitle “Zombie Border Siege.”

The visual resemblance to Tetris is central to the controversy. Players encounter the familiar arrangement of colored pieces inside a vertical playing field, but with an immigration-enforcement theme attached.

In its Friday statement, the company emphasized its commitment to connecting people across communities and thanked its fans. It then explicitly disclaimed involvement in the White House game.

“We take copyright infringement very seriously,” the company added in the statement posted to its official X account.

The response addresses both the association with the political message and the potential use of protected intellectual property. Those are distinct issues: a company can publicly reject an association while separately considering whether it has grounds for a legal claim.

The statement itself did not announce a lawsuit or identify a specific demand that the White House remove the game. A company representative subsequently said the matter was under review.

A game’s resemblance to Tetris does not, by itself, settle whether infringement occurred.

The U.S. Copyright Office explains that copyright does not protect a game’s underlying idea or methods of play. It can, however, protect sufficiently original literary or pictorial elements, including artwork.

Applied here, that distinction means the legal inquiry would require more than identifying falling blocks. It would involve examining which creative elements were allegedly copied, whether those elements qualify for protection, and any applicable defenses. The company’s warning is therefore a statement of concern, rather than a judicial finding.

That distinction matters for readers assessing headlines about a possible confrontation. Public criticism, a removal request and a filed infringement action represent different stages of a dispute.

Computer programmer Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984. Its seven geometric playing pieces helped establish a puzzle format that has endured across generations. The brand’s official website identifies Tetris Holding as the rights holder and The Tetris Company as its licensee.

The White House arcade places its border game alongside titles promoting other administration priorities, including school nutrition and children’s savings accounts. “Rio Run,” another entry, is described as a border-patrol game along the Rio Grande. Those descriptions appear on the government’s arcade page.

For now, the immediate development is Tetris’s public objection. Whether its review produces a formal demand or court action remains an open question.
