Shark Tank Boosted Teaspressa Sales — Now It’s in Chapter 11

ARIZONA - Teaspressa walked away from Shark Tank without a Shark.

It still got something enormously valuable: millions of people knew its name.

Nearly a decade later, however, the Phoenix beverage company is confronting the difference between getting attention and building a business capable of surviving long after the television cameras leave.

My Little Tea Kettle LLC, which does business as Teaspressa, filed a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition September 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona. The case is My Little Tea Kettle LLC, No. 2:26-bk-09220-EPB, assigned to U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Eddward P. Ballinger Jr.

The initial bankruptcy disclosures place Teaspressa's assets between $50,001 and $100,000, while liabilities are listed between $1 million and $10 million. Phoenix Business Journal reported that the company's qualifying debt is below the $3.424 million Subchapter V eligibility ceiling and that Teaspressa estimated it has between 50 and 99 creditors.

That financial picture is striking because Teaspressa's Shark Tank appearance was, by several measures, a success even though DeVane did not secure an investment.

DeVane appeared during Season 7 in February 2016 seeking $50,000 for 10% of Teaspressa. Her concept was concentrated tea brewed in a way designed to produce espresso-style drinks. All five Sharks ultimately passed.

The customers did not.

DeVane later wrote that sales more than tripled following the appearance, generating enough money to help her open a brick-and-mortar location. Teaspressa subsequently expanded its products and distribution, and its website says the company remained entirely founder-owned.

That makes Teaspressa an interesting case study in what might be called the Shark Tank effect.

Appearing on national television can function like an enormous advertising campaign. A company does not necessarily need a deal with Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner or another Shark to benefit. Millions of viewers see the product, search for it online and place orders.

But television exposure primarily solves one problem: customer awareness.

It does not automatically solve inventory costs, payroll, leases, manufacturing expenses, debt service, customer acquisition after the publicity fades, or the difficult economics of operating physical stores.

Teaspressa's experience underscores that distinction.

The company expanded to multiple storefronts before the COVID-19 pandemic forced major retrenchment. DeVane has described closing shops and pivoting the company while continuing to sell online and develop new products. Today, Teaspressa markets patented tea formulas and its Luxe Mixer Cubes while positioning its tea as an alternative for consumers seeking coffee-style energy and preparation methods.

And importantly, Chapter 11 does not mean Teaspressa has shut down.

The company elected Subchapter V, a streamlined form of Chapter 11 Congress created for qualifying small businesses. Unlike liquidation under Chapter 7, Chapter 11 is generally intended to give a business an opportunity to reorganize its obligations and continue operating.

In a Subchapter V case, a trustee is appointed to assist with and oversee the reorganization process, but the debtor generally remains in possession of its business while attempting to develop a viable repayment plan. The procedure was designed to be faster and less expensive than conventional Chapter 11 proceedings.

Teaspressa's docket identifies Jody Ann Corrales as Subchapter V trustee. Court records also show the bankruptcy court authorized the company to pay certain prepetition wages, payroll taxes, employee benefits and independent-contractor compensation — an early step that can help a reorganizing business maintain operations.

The next several weeks may reveal whether Teaspressa's problem is primarily debt that can be restructured or whether the underlying business itself cannot generate enough cash to support its obligations.

A meeting of creditors is scheduled for October 20. The deadline for creditors to file proofs of claim is November 20, and the docket lists December 10, 2026, as the deadline for Teaspressa's Subchapter V reorganization plan.

Those dates matter more now than the company's television appearance.

Shark Tank helped Teaspressa prove that people were interested in the product. The bankruptcy court will now test something different — whether the business behind that product can be reorganized into something financially sustainable.

For entrepreneurs, that may ultimately be the most valuable lesson in the Teaspressa story.

A television audience can give a company its breakthrough.

It cannot guarantee its survival.
