Insurance usually works in one direction: you pay premiums, and the company holds onto them unless disaster strikes. This time, the money is flowing back. Millions of State Farm customers may be entitled to payments from the company, part of a record-setting cash-back dividend that is still rolling out across the country.

The Largest Dividend in the Company’s History

The mutual auto insurer announced in July that millions of qualifying customers have already received payments from its one-time, $5 billion cash-back dividend. State Farm said it is the largest in the company’s more than 100-year history, and more payments are still on the way.

The CEO’s Case for the Mutual Model

“As a mutual company with a customer-first focus, State Farm Mutual is able to provide value directly to our customers while maintaining financial strength to keep our promises in the future,” said Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual president and CEO. “That translated this year to lower auto rates and cash back in the form of a $5 billion policyholder dividend.”

How the Payments Are Calculated

The dividend is going out in waves to eligible customers covering more than 49 million State Farm Mutual auto vehicles. Each customer’s payment is based on a percentage of the premium paid for each qualifying policy in 2025. According to State Farm’s website, those percentages vary by state, ranging from 4% to 10%.

How Customers Will Be Notified

Qualifying customers will hear about their pending payment by email from “[email protected]” or by letter in the mail, so it pays to watch for both. Think of it as a refund notice that could easily be mistaken for junk mail.

Email or Check, Depending on Your Account

Customers who already have an email address registered with State Farm will receive instructions on logging into the State Farm dividend payment portal, where they can select their preferred payment method. Customers without a registered email address will automatically receive a check in the mail.

No Strings on Future Rates

State Farm said these payments will not affect future auto insurance rates. For policyholders, the dividend arrives as a straightforward bonus rather than a trade-off against what they will pay next year.

For a company built on collecting premiums, handing back $5 billion is a notable reversal, and millions of drivers are now waiting to see whether the check, or the email, lands in their hands.
