NASA Telescope Will Fall Back to Earth Wednesday And Some Debris Is Expected To Survive

What to Watch as Swift Comes Down

  • NASA says the 3,200-pound Swift Observatory is expected to reenter Wednesday, November 4, with some components surviving the fall.
  • Any surviving debris can land only between 20.6 degrees north and 20.6 degrees south latitude, a massive belt circling Earth.
  • The public can track Swift online as Space Force and civilian tracking organizations narrow the final reentry window.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has spent nearly 22 years looking outward into deep space. On Wednesday, the attention turns the other way.

Swift is coming home.

The U.S. Space Force currently predicts that the roughly 3,200-pound spacecraft will reenter Earth’s atmosphere at approximately 3:30 a.m. EST on November 4, although that forecast carries an uncertainty of plus or minus 11 hours. That window should tighten significantly as the spacecraft drops lower.

NASA expects most of Swift to burn apart during the high-speed plunge through the atmosphere. But not all of it.

“Some components are expected to survive re-entry,” NASA said Monday.

So where will those pieces land?

Right now, nobody can responsibly name a city, country or stretch of ocean.

Swift travels in a relatively low-inclination orbit. That means surviving debris can fall only between 20.6 degrees south latitude and 20.6 degrees north latitude. The potential corridor circles the planet and includes enormous portions of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans along with parts of Latin America, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Puerto Rico, southern Mexico and portions of Hawaii.

Much of that belt is ocean. Statistically, that matters.

The Aerospace Corporation is publicly plotting Swift’s predicted reentry ground track under its catalog number NORAD 28485. Its map shows the portions of Swift’s orbit that could correspond with reentry as the timing uncertainty shrinks. The organization cautions that possible reentry points can lie anywhere along the predicted track until a much tighter time is established.

The public can also follow Swift’s orbital position through satellite-tracking services. N2YO lists Swift as 2004-047A, NORAD 28485, and provides orbital-pass and tracking information.

NASA itself is continuing to post official updates through its Swift mission blog as Space Force refines the prediction.

NASA Swift reentry updates

One number buried in NASA’s announcement deserves attention. The agency estimates the probability of harm to anyone on Earth at approximately 1 in 2,100. That does not mean an individual person has those odds of being struck. It is a worldwide aggregate casualty-risk calculation across the potential debris footprint. NASA still describes the likelihood of anyone being harmed as unlikely.

Swift was launched in November 2004 for what was supposed to be a two-year mission. Instead, it operated for more than two decades, studying gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, black holes, comets and other transient events. Recent solar activity increased atmospheric drag on the observatory, accelerating the decay of its orbit. A commercial effort to raise Swift into a higher orbit ended without a boost.

Now the final experiment is Swift itself.

Until trackers reduce that 11-hour uncertainty to minutes, any claim that the telescope will fall near one particular country is speculation. But as Wednesday approaches, each new orbital pass should make the answer considerably clearer.
