Stephen Miller to Replace Susie Wiles as White House Chief of Staff After GOP Midterm Defeat

Stephen Miller

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Friday that Stephen Miller, one of his closest and most influential advisers, will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff following Republicans' significant losses in the midterm elections. The appointment elevates a longtime architect of Trump's immigration policies to one of the most powerful positions in the federal government.

Miller, who currently serves as deputy chief of staff, has been a central figure in Trump's political operation since the president's first campaign in 2016. His appointment, effective Monday, Nov. 9, signals that Trump intends to maintain his administration's hard-line approach to immigration and other major policy priorities despite the Republican Party's electoral setbacks.

The announcement was reported by the Associated Press and other national news organizations.

Miller's Influence in the Trump Administration

Miller has established himself as one of Trump's most trusted policy advisers. He joined Trump's 2016 presidential campaign as a speechwriter and subsequently became a leading voice in shaping the administration's domestic policy agenda.

He is particularly associated with the administration's restrictive immigration policies, border enforcement initiatives and mass deportation efforts.

Before joining Trump's administration, Miller worked for former Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., who later became Trump's first attorney general.

Throughout Trump's political career, Miller has maintained a prominent position within the president's inner circle. His influence has extended beyond immigration to include national security, executive authority and broader domestic policy initiatives.

His elevation to chief of staff gives him an even greater role in coordinating White House operations, advising the president and directing the administration's legislative and political priorities.

Questions About Miller's Imprisonment

Although questions have circulated about Stephen Miller's background, there is no verified reporting establishing that he has been imprisoned.

Available biographical accounts identify Miller's education, political career, government service and work with the Trump administration. They do not document a criminal conviction, prison sentence or period of incarceration.

Consequently, claims that Miller has served time in prison should not be presented as established fact without reliable documentation.

It is important to distinguish between political controversy, criticism of government policies and criminal proceedings. Miller's immigration policies have attracted substantial criticism from civil rights organizations, Democratic lawmakers and immigration advocates. However, political opposition and criticism do not constitute evidence of imprisonment.

Wiles' Departure Follows Republican Midterm Losses

Wiles' departure comes after Republicans suffered significant losses in the midterm elections, surrendering control of Congress to Democrats.

Trump praised Wiles following the announcement and said she would continue working with his political organization.

In her statement, Wiles described serving in the White House as the honor of a lifetime and expressed continued support for the president and his political agenda.

Wiles made history as the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff. She also became Trump's longest-serving chief of staff, bringing greater organizational discipline to an administration that experienced considerable leadership turnover during his first presidential term.

Her political career included managing Trump's Florida campaign operations in 2016 and 2020 before overseeing his nationwide campaign in 2024.

Wiles' Health Struggle and Political Legacy

Wiles' departure also follows her public disclosure of an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis in March 2026.

Despite undergoing surgery and treatment while managing the demanding responsibilities of her position, she continued working in the administration.

Approximately six months later, Wiles announced that she was cancer-free after receiving encouraging pathology results.

Trump publicly praised her determination and described her as a fighter.

Her tenure was also marked by controversy following interviews published by Vanity Fair in December 2025. Wiles made unusually candid remarks about Trump and several senior administration officials, prompting criticism and renewed attention to internal White House relationships.

Despite the controversy, she remained in her position until the latest leadership change.

What Miller's Appointment Means for the White House

Miller's appointment represents a significant decision about the direction of Trump's second administration.

Rather than choosing a figure associated with compromise or a more moderate political approach following the Republican losses, Trump selected an adviser closely identified with his existing policy agenda.

The chief of staff position carries substantial responsibility for managing presidential priorities, coordinating senior officials and controlling access to the president.

With Miller assuming the position, immigration enforcement and other administration priorities are likely to remain central to White House policymaking.

The leadership change also raises questions about how the administration will respond to a Democratic-controlled Congress and increased congressional scrutiny.

For now, Trump's decision makes one thing clear: He is placing one of his most loyal and influential advisers at the center of White House operations as his administration enters a challenging new political chapter.
