BEIJING, Nov. 7, 2026 — A Pakistani astronaut is set to make history by becoming the first foreign national to visit China's Tiangong space station, joining the crew of the Shenzhou-24 spacecraft as part of an expanding space cooperation agreement between Pakistan and China.

The historic mission will mark the first time a foreign astronaut participates in China's crewed space program. According to China's Manned Space Agency, the Pakistani astronaut will undertake a short-duration mission in orbit before returning to Earth aboard the Shenzhou-23 spacecraft.

Chinese state media reported the development Saturday, citing information from the country's space agency. However, officials have not yet announced the mission's launch date or identified which Pakistani astronaut will be selected for the historic flight.

Two Pakistani Candidates Undergo Intensive Training

Two Pakistani candidates, Muhammad Zeeshan Ali and Khurram Daud, have been undergoing astronaut training in China alongside their Chinese counterparts.

According to earlier reports by China's official Xinhua News Agency, both candidates began preparations for the mission with the possibility of one being selected as a payload specialist for the short-term spaceflight.

Their training has focused on developing practical operational skills required for space missions, including the ability to perform tasks aboard a spacecraft and adapt to the demanding conditions of space.

The program has also included intensive Chinese-language instruction to help the Pakistani candidates communicate effectively with Chinese astronauts and understand operational procedures during the mission.

The final selection will determine which candidate gets the opportunity to become Pakistan's first astronaut to travel to China's space station.

Pakistan-China Space Cooperation

The upcoming mission is part of a space cooperation agreement signed between Pakistan and China in February 2025.

Under the agreement, the two countries established a framework for training Pakistani astronauts and enabling one of them to participate in a Chinese space mission.

The partnership represents an important development in Pakistan's efforts to expand its presence in international space exploration.

China has provided training facilities, technical expertise and operational support as Pakistan works toward developing its human spaceflight capabilities.

The agreement also reflects the broader strategic relationship between the two countries, which have maintained close diplomatic, economic and technological ties for decades.

For Pakistan, participation in the Shenzhou-24 mission would represent a significant milestone, offering an opportunity to gain practical experience in human spaceflight and strengthen its scientific and technological capabilities.

China's Growing Ambitions in Space

China has made significant investments in its space program and has increasingly positioned itself as a major competitor in international space exploration.

The country's Tiangong space station, whose name translates to "Heavenly Palace," is a central part of its long-term ambitions in orbit.

China has developed the station as an independent platform for scientific research, technological experiments and long-duration human spaceflight missions.

The arrival of a Pakistani astronaut would represent a new chapter in the station's history, which has so far involved Chinese astronauts.

Beijing is also preparing for its first crewed lunar landing, with a target of sending astronauts to the Moon by 2030.

Space Race Between China and the United States

China's growing ambitions come amid increasing competition with the United States in space exploration.

NASA has outlined plans to return astronauts to the lunar surface in 2028, two years ahead of China's stated target for its first crewed lunar landing.

Both countries are investing in spacecraft, lunar exploration technologies and infrastructure intended to support future missions beyond Earth's orbit.

While the United States has historically played a leading role in human space exploration, China's expanding capabilities have made it an increasingly important participant in the global space sector.

For Pakistan, the upcoming Shenzhou-24 mission offers an opportunity to become part of this rapidly developing field.

If completed as planned, the flight will not only establish a historic first for Pakistan but also mark a significant moment in China's efforts to expand international participation in its human spaceflight program.

The mission is expected to strengthen scientific cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing while opening new possibilities for Pakistan's future involvement in space research and exploration.
