America’s Teenagers Are Getting Hooked On Gambling And Parents Say It Often Goes Completely Undetected — Experts Warn Of A Public Health Crisis

NATIONAL INVESTIGATION — A growing body of research and a wave of devastating family accounts are painting an alarming picture of what public health experts are now calling a full-blown adolescent gambling crisis in America — one fueled by the explosion of legal sports betting, aggressive advertising on platforms popular with minors, and a regulatory framework that critics say was never designed to protect children.

According to a 2026 survey by Common Sense Media, one in three boys between the ages of 11 and 17 reported gambling in the past year. Sixty percent of children in the same age group said they had been exposed to gambling advertisements on YouTube and social media platforms. The numbers have prompted researchers to draw direct parallels to the early years of the youth vaping epidemic — another crisis that experts say was initially underestimated by regulators and parents alike.

How Teenagers Are Getting In

Despite legal age restrictions that require bettors to be 21 in most states, teens are accessing gambling platforms with alarming ease. According to multiple reports, young people routinely borrow accounts belonging to older siblings, parents, or friends. In some cases, teenagers have registered for accounts using their parents' Social Security numbers — sometimes with parental knowledge and even permission.

Complicating the regulatory picture further are platforms that operate in legal gray areas. Apps marketed as sweepstakes or prediction markets — rather than traditional gambling — are not subject to the same regulations as sportsbooks. These platforms have become popular entry points for underage users who may not even recognize that what they are doing constitutes gambling.

The Addiction Cycle

Mental health professionals say the addiction pattern among young gamblers follows a predictable but devastating trajectory. Teenagers — especially boys — tend to believe that their knowledge of sports gives them an edge over the house. Early wins reinforce this belief and create a rush of dopamine that researchers say can be particularly powerful in developing brains.

When losses inevitably mount, young gamblers tend to chase their bets rather than stop. Secrecy follows as debts grow, and by the time parents or school officials notice a problem, many teens are already in crisis.

A 2025 study published in the journal International Gambling Studies found that individuals who begin gambling before the age of 18 face more than an 80 percent higher risk of developing problem gambling behaviors later in life — a statistic that underscores the long-term stakes of early exposure.

Parents Say It Goes Undetected

Unlike substance abuse, which often produces visible signs, gambling addiction can remain hidden for months or even years. Parents interviewed for this report described discovering thousands of dollars in losses on credit cards, Venmo accounts, and cryptocurrency wallets linked to their children — often only after the situation had reached a critical point.

One parent from suburban New Jersey, who asked to remain anonymous, described discovering that her 16-year-old son had accumulated more than $12,000 in gambling debts over the course of a single football season, primarily through a friend's DraftKings account.

"There were no signs," she said. "His grades were fine. He went to practice. He seemed normal. And then one day his friend's parent called me and said there was a problem."

The Advertising Pipeline

Critics point to the saturation of gambling advertising in spaces frequented by young audiences as a primary driver of the crisis. Major sportsbooks have invested billions in marketing campaigns featuring celebrity athletes, influencers, and comedians. Many of these campaigns run on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, where age-gating mechanisms are widely regarded as ineffective.

Industry groups maintain that they comply with all applicable advertising regulations and actively discourage underage gambling. But consumer advocates argue that the sheer volume of advertising — combined with the normalization of gambling language in sports culture — has created an environment where betting feels like a natural extension of fandom for young viewers.

What Comes Next

Several states are considering legislation that would impose stricter advertising restrictions and require enhanced age verification for gambling platforms. At the federal level, a bipartisan group of lawmakers has called for hearings on the impact of online gambling on minors.

Meanwhile, organizations like the National Council on Problem Gambling are reporting a sharp increase in calls to their helpline from parents of teenagers — a trend that experts say represents only the visible tip of a much larger problem.

If you or someone you know is struggling with a gambling problem, the National Council on Problem Gambling helpline is available at 1-800-522-4700.
