Understanding the tension between Brazil and X owner Elon Musk

X has been in the news recently over its growing feud with Brazil. The South American nation clashed with platform owner Elon Musk after demanding that the latter implement blocks on certain accounts in the country.

This comes as Brazil's run into trouble with far-right supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro carrying out insurgences in the nation's capital city, Brasília. Musk, however, said such an order to block certain accounts constituted censorship and an attack on conservative speech.

Eventually, the tension made its way to the Brazilian legal system, which ordered Musk to name a legal representative for the platform. The X owner refused, prompting Brazil to ban access to the site nationwide on Friday.

Further adding fuel to the fire is Musk's proclamation that Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes is an "evil dictator" only cosplaying as a judge.

As of today, Brazilian residents and others residing in the South American country have found themselves unable to access the site.

X now banned in Brazil effective immediately

The roughly 40 million Brazilian residents who use X now receive error messages when attempting to access the platform. Furthermore, the nation's government has made clear that it doesn't want anyone circumventing this ban via the use of virtual private networks (VPNs).

Anyone in Brazil who's caught accessing X by VPN is subject to a daily fine of 50,000 reais ($8,911.94). The suspension of X access will maintain until the platform abides by court orders and pays any fines it's been issued.

Musk, meanwhile, has taken to his platform, accusing Brazil of being an "oppressive regime" with an agenda to "bankrupt" critics who speak the "truth."
