California storms pound West Coast: Newsom asks for Federal Emergency status

The “atmospheric rivers” appear as long plumes of water stretching out into the ocean and toward the coast. 

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said in a statement, “We are gearing up for the next wave of storms and urging all of those still outdoors to please go to a respite center or at least get to higher ground away from trees and bodies of water.” 

The radar shows the second of five approaching “atmospheric rivers” is approaching the coast. And expect the California storms to continue for the next 10 days.

Today residents began clean-up activities and damage estimates. Forecasters expect the next storm to move into the area on Sunday night. And warn that it will be more powerful than the last one

California Storms wreak havoc

“We are just getting repeatedly pounded by storm after storm,” said PG&E spokeswoman Tracy Correa Lopez. “Flooding is an issue. The number one issue right now is access to a lot of these areas.”

More than 375,000 customers lost power in Northern California overnight Saturday. The city of Sacramento still has half the residents without power. And the latest powerful storm has left fallen trees and downed power lines in its wake.
