Elevated Safety Posture Ordered for NASA Astronauts as ISS Leak Concerns Prompt Precautionary Measures An Elevated Safety Posture has been ordered for astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) after NASA and Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, responded to a new leak connected to a long-standing issue in a Russian module of the orbiting laboratory. The precautionary measure required NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 members and another NASA astronaut to move into the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft while repairs were conducted. NASA officials emphasized that the action was taken out of an abundance of caution as engineers work to better understand and address the latest leak issue. New Leak Detected in Russian Segment of ISS According to NASA communications officials, the issue centers on the transfer tunnel of the Russian-built Zvezda service module, an area known as PrK. The section has reportedly experienced cracks and small leaks for several years. Roscosmos has previously managed the issue through periodic repairs and operational measures designed to limit risks to the station and its crew. NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens explained that the cracks have remained a concern for both agencies, prompting ongoing monitoring and analysis. More information about the International Space Station can be found on NASA’s official website: https://www.nasa.gov. Crew Directed to Take Precautionary Action Following reports of new leakage, Roscosmos elected to conduct a more extensive repair operation. As a result, NASA directed all four members of the SpaceX Crew-12 mission, along with NASA astronaut Chris Williams, to move into the docked SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and assume what officials described as an “elevated safety posture.” The Dragon capsule serves as an emergency safe haven and evacuation vehicle for astronauts aboard the ISS if a serious emergency occurs. NASA officials stressed that the move was precautionary and designed to ensure crew safety while repairs were underway. Additional details about SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft are available at https://www.spacex.com. NASA and Roscosmos Working Together The latest incident highlights the continued cooperation between NASA and Roscosmos despite broader geopolitical tensions. Engineers from both agencies are investigating the root cause of the recurring cracks while seeking a more permanent solution to the problem. Stevens noted that the international partnership supporting the ISS remains committed to maintaining the station’s safety and operational capabilities. The International Space Station represents one of the most complex multinational scientific collaborations ever undertaken, involving contributions from the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada. Learn more about international ISS partnerships at https://www.esa.int. What Is SpaceX Crew-12? The astronauts affected by the precautionary measures are part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission. The mission launched on February 13 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaver
