Biden Plea Deals with 9/11 Terrorists Cause Outrage in DC

Biden Plea Deals

The Biden plea deals have sparked significant controversy by pleading out three of the terrorists responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Bin Attash, and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, the plotters behind the tragic events of September 11, 2001, have agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in exchange for life sentences.

These plea deals, which allow the men to escape the death penalty, have raised concerns across the political spectrum, with both Republicans and Democrats expressing outrage over the decision.

The New York Times reported that Pentagon officials approved the plea agreements, which will prevent the three terrorists from facing a death penalty trial. The decision has alarmed many in Washington, D.C., including senators who believe that justice has not been served.

The Pentagon and FBI informed the families of the 9/11 victims last August that the death penalty would no longer be pursued in the prosecution of these men, adding another layer of disappointment and frustration for those directly impacted by the attacks.

The 9/11 plot involved members of al-Qaida seizing control of airplanes and crashing them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people, including over 150 residents of Connecticut.

Bipartisan Concerns

Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, voiced his concerns about the plea deals, stating, "I am very concerned about this plea deal. I think we ought to scrutinize it very carefully."

Blumenthal, who has been an advocate for the 9/11 families and their legal action against Saudi Arabia, expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and the potential complicity of other countries in the attacks.

"There is so much here that we don't know, and we have an obligation to tell the American people about the potential complicity, not only of these defendants but of Saudi Arabia and other countries," Blumenthal added. He called on the White House to provide a clear explanation for the decision, emphasizing that the 9/11 families and the American public deserve to know the truth.

Brett Eagleson, president of 9/11 Justice, shared his disapproval of the plea deals, saying, "We are deeply troubled by these plea deals.

While we acknowledge the decision to avoid the death penalty, our primary concern remains access to these individuals for information. These plea deals should not perpetuate a system of closed-door agreements, where crucial information is hidden without giving the families of the victims the chance to learn the full truth."

Republican Outrage

Republican lawmakers were also vocal in their criticism of the Biden administration's decision. Senator Marco Rubio expressed his disdain for the plea deals, describing them as "par for the course" for the current administration. Rubio highlighted concerns about the potential release of other detainees and their possible return to terrorist activities.

Senator J.D. Vance from Ohio stated, "We need a president who kills terrorists, not negotiates with them," reflecting the sentiment that the plea deals undermine efforts to bring justice to those responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz called the deal "a disgrace," emphasizing that the terrorists deserve the death penalty. "Anything short of their execution is a complete and total miscarriage of justice," Cruz wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson described the plea deals as a "slap in the face" for the families of the 9/11 victims. "The Biden-Harris Administration has done the unthinkable: they've agreed to a plea deal with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the September 11th attacks, and two of his accomplices," Johnson stated.

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina also criticized the plea deals, arguing that they send the wrong message at a time when terrorism remains a global threat. "It's absolutely the wrong signal at the wrong time. The world is on fire. Terrorism is rampant. And we give a plea deal to the mastermind of 9/11? That just encourages more attacks," Graham stated.

Pentagon Approval

Despite the widespread criticism, some lawmakers believe the plea deals provide a sense of closure. Senator John Hickenlooper, a Democrat from Colorado, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, noting that it ensures the terrorists remain behind bars. "9/11 was one of the worst days for many of us," Hickenlooper said. "And it's funny that there's an emotional scar there that's never going to be erased. But in a funny way, it's comforting that they'll never see the light of day where they're not in prison."

Senator Jack Reed, a Democrat from Rhode Island, echoed Hickenlooper's sentiments, describing the guilty plea as "compelling." Virginia Democrat Senator Tim Kaine also viewed the plea deals as generally positive, stating that they offer a sense of closure after more than two decades since the attacks.

Republican Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota acknowledged the difficulty in reaching a resolution after so many years, expressing relief that the terrorists remain incarcerated. "I doubt that we would have gotten to the point of a death penalty execution anyway," Rounds stated. "I'm glad they are 'out of circulation' and 'still in prison.'"
