He later confessed to lying about the burial site after the Holloways’ lawyer had left Aruba. The suspect’s father, Paul van der Sloot, who was an Aruba judge, passed away in 2010.

Despite multiple arrests and releases due to a lack of evidence, no one has been prosecuted in connection with Natalee Holloway’s disappearance. 

Van der Sloot will be temporarily transferred to the United States to stand trial for the extortion charges before returning to complete his murder sentence. If convicted, he could face up to 40 additional years in an American prison.
