A luxury expedition cruise ship has become the center of an international health crisis after a deadly outbreak of the Andes strain of hantavirus — a rare and dangerous virus capable of spreading between humans — has claimed three lives and infected several others onboard.

On Wednesday, three passengers were medically evacuated from the MV Hondius as authorities scramble to contain the situation. The ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, is currently carrying nearly 150 people and was denied docking in Cape Verde before being rerouted toward Spain’s Canary Islands.

Confirmed Toll and Response

According to the World Health Organization, three people have died after contracting the virus: a Dutch couple and a German national. There are now eight total cases — three laboratory-confirmed and five suspected. While no new symptoms have been reported among the remaining passengers, the situation remains tense.

Passengers have described a calm but cautious atmosphere aboard the vessel. Travel blogger Kasem Hato told NBC News that people are maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, sanitizing frequently, and limiting close contact. Two additional infectious disease specialists from the Netherlands are expected to join the single medic already onboard.

The Hondius departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1 for what was meant to be a dream expedition visiting Antarctica and remote Atlantic islands. Instead, it has turned into a floating health concern. A new case was also identified in Switzerland involving a man who had been on the ship.

The Andes strain is particularly concerning because, unlike most hantaviruses (typically spread only through rodent droppings), it can transmit between people through close contact.
