FBI Raids Virginia Lawmaker’s Office and Cannabis Shop in Expanding Corruption Probe Tied to Spanberger Ally

A sweeping FBI operation rocked Virginia politics Wednesday as federal agents executed coordinated raids on the office of a powerful Democratic state senator and a nearby cannabis dispensary she co-owns, escalating a corruption and illegal marijuana sales investigation that is now placing Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s political network under intense scrutiny.

The high-profile searches, backed by court-authorized warrants, triggered shock across Portsmouth and immediately raised questions about influence, legality, and the reach of the federal probe.

FBI SWEEPS OFFICE AND CANNABIS BUSINESS IN COORDINATED RAID

The FBI raided the office of longtime Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas in Portsmouth, Virginia, while simultaneously deploying a SWAT-team operation at a nearby cannabis dispensary linked to the senator.

Federal law enforcement sources confirmed that at least three people were detained during the coordinated raids.

Agents executed court-authorized criminal search warrants, which were signed off by a federal judge after determining there was probable cause to proceed.

Lucas, a dominant figure in Virginia Democratic politics and a major supporter of Gov. Abigail Spanberger during the 2025 campaign, was directly at the center of the law enforcement activity.

A federal law enforcement source familiar with the case clarified that the corruption probe was opened by the FBI during the Biden administration.

LAWMAKER ARRIVES AS FEDERAL AGENTS MOVE IN

Lucas arrived at her office while the FBI search was underway.

She told Fox News that she had no idea what the FBI agents were doing at her office.

The simultaneous presence of federal agents, search warrants, and a live political figure at the scene underscored the intensity of the unfolding investigation.

SPANBERGER TEAM RESPONDS AS POLITICAL PRESSURE BUILDS

A spokesperson for Gov. Abigail Spanberger acknowledged the situation, telling Fox News Digital that the governor "is aware of today’s law enforcement operation in Portsmouth."

The spokesperson added that, "in the absence of additional details, the Governor will not be commenting on a federal investigation at this time."

The development adds fresh political strain on Spanberger, who is already facing weakening polling numbers and criticism from opponents who accuse her of pushing a far-left agenda in a once-purple state.

A POWERFUL DEMOCRATIC FIGURE UNDER SCRUTINY

Lucas is not only a veteran state senator but also one of Virginia’s most influential Democratic power brokers.

She serves as Virginia Senate president pro tempore and chairs the Finance & Appropriations Committee, giving her significant control over state budget and policy decisions.

She is also co-owner of a cannabis business, which has previously drawn regulatory attention after reports alleged some products were mislabeled or exceeded legal THC limits under Virginia law.

Lucas has long supported marijuana legalization in Virginia, co-sponsoring the 2021 law that legalized possession and continuing to push for a regulated retail cannabis market.

POLITICAL FALLOUT AND PUBLIC CONTROVERSY

Lucas has also been a polarizing public figure known for a combative and highly active social media presence, often using memes and provocative language.

During heated debate over Virginia’s redistricting map, she clashed with critics on X, criticizing President Donald Trump and posting a GIF of herself dancing to Famous Dex’s "Hoes Mad."

She has also stated that Democrats will "fight fire with fire" in the redistricting battle, adding, "You can bet your a-- that Democrats are ready for this fight."

REPUBLICAN RESPONSE TO FBI ACTION

After news of the raids emerged, Virginia state Delegate Wren Williams, a Republican and outspoken critic of the Spanberger-backed redistricting plan, reacted strongly.

Williams told Fox News Digital that "Rumors of corruption and pay-to-play politics have long surrounded the Democratic Party’s infrastructure in Virginia. However, no one has been willing to do anything to hold these power brokers accountable."

He added, while emphasizing due process, that "everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but it takes a federal judge to issue search warrants to the FBI."

Williams also referenced past political turmoil, saying, "When the chief of police and prosecutor tried to hold Senator Lucas accountable for her actions last time, each were removed from office shortly thereafter," and concluded, "Sunlight is the best cure for corruption. I’m sure the Commonwealth of Virginia will be very interested to see what comes of this investigation."
