A Miami-based financial technology firm has collapsed under mounting debt, with pepper pay filed for chapter 7 marking the latest tremor in the volatile fintech landscape.

The sudden bankruptcy filing paints a stark picture: a once-operational payment processor now navigating liquidation as liabilities tower over its remaining assets.

Pepper Pay LLC filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on March 31 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Miami. The petition, submitted by company manager Eric Hannelius, reveals a company stretched beyond its limits.

Court documents show Pepper Pay holding just over $665,000 in assets while carrying more than $3.4 million in liabilities—a financial imbalance that ultimately forced the company into liquidation.

Assets Spread Thin Across Accounts

According to the filing, the company’s cash reserves are scattered across several banking institutions, including Evolve Bank, Esquire Bank, Bluevine, and Truist Bank.

These accounts collectively hold just over $600,000. Additional assets include approximately $40,000 in accounts receivable and about $20,000 in equipment—figures that barely dent the company’s debt load.

Debt Dominated by a Single Creditor

Much of Pepper Pay’s financial burden stems from unsecured claims, with one creditor looming large.

TSYS Acquiring Solutions LLC—which operates as Global Payments—is owed nearly $2.9 million, making it the company’s largest creditor by a wide margin.

The imbalance underscores how a single financial obligation can tip a company from survival into collapse.

Revenue Couldn’t Keep Pace

Despite generating revenue, Pepper Pay struggled to bridge the widening gap between income and obligations.

The company reported:

• $103,000 in revenue so far this year
• Nearly $1.4 million in 2025
• Around $1.3 million in 2024

Even with steady inflows, the numbers suggest a business unable to outrun its liabilities—like a runner gaining speed but never escaping a tightening shadow.

Efforts to obtain comment from Pepper Pay’s attorney, Michael R. Bakst, were unsuccessful, leaving questions about the company’s next steps unanswered.

Fintech Boom Meets Harsh Reality

The bankruptcy lands against the backdrop of a booming fintech sector in South Florida. According to the latest eMerge Insights report, startups in the region attracted $909 million across 85 deals last year—a 23% increase from the previous year.

Across Florida, fintech ventures secured $1.2 billion in total funding, with South Florida capturing the lion’s share.

Yet Pepper Pay’s downfall highlights a sobering contrast: even in a thriving investment climate, not all players survive. The sector may be booming, but for some companies, the margin for error remains razor-thin.
