A 23-year-old Florida man, Joseph Voigt, is in custody after shooting his parents, killing his father, Marvin Voigt, 63, and critically wounding his mother, Susan Voigt, 58.
The incident occurred late Saturday night in Bartow, Florida, after what police say was a domestic dispute over Joseph’s refusal to get a job and his excessive video gaming.
Police responded to the scene around 11:20 p.m. after Susan Voigt managed to report the attack.
Officers found Marvin Voigt dead in the driveway from gunshot wounds, while Susan was found inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head.
“They found the mother sitting up on the couch,” Bartow Police Chief Stephen Walker told reporters. “She was alive. She had been shot in the head once.”
Chief Walker expressed the community’s sorrow over the tragedy. “Everything we’ve heard about this couple was that they were really good people,” he said. “It’s really sad… something silly that he was upset about.”
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless shooting.”
