A 23-year-old Florida man, Joseph Voigt, is in custody after shooting his parents, killing his father, Marvin Voigt, 63, and critically wounding his mother, Susan Voigt, 58.

The incident occurred late Saturday night in Bartow, Florida, after what police say was a domestic dispute over Joseph’s refusal to get a job and his excessive video gaming.

Police responded to the scene around 11:20 p.m. after Susan Voigt managed to report the attack.

Officers found Marvin Voigt dead in the driveway from gunshot wounds, while Susan was found inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head.

“They found the mother sitting up on the couch,” Bartow Police Chief Stephen Walker told reporters. “She was alive. She had been shot in the head once.”

Chief Walker expressed the community’s sorrow over the tragedy. “Everything we've heard about this couple was that they were really good people,” he said. “It’s really sad… something silly that he was upset about.”

Florida Man Arrested

Authorities issued an alert for Joseph Voigt and his vehicle, which was located hours later in Orlando. Orlando Police apprehended him during a felony traffic stop around 2 a.m. on Sunday. 

Voigt confessed to the shootings and appeared in court Monday morning. He will face murder and attempted murder charges in Polk County.

Polk County sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement, "Thanks to the rapid response of the Bartow Police Department this violent and dangerous suspect was quickly apprehended." 

"They asked for our assistance, and we were happy to oblige. My detectives will continue their thorough investigation into this crime to ensure Voigt will face the full consequences of his actions."

Voigt’s criminal history includes prior arrests for battery and discharging a firearm in a residential area.
