A former teacher at Miss Hall’s School is set to appear in Berkshire Superior Court Wednesday in Pittsfield, where he will be arraigned on three counts of rape tied to alleged sexual assaults involving two former students. The case is drawing intense attention as key figures, including the accusers and public officials, prepare to speak publicly outside the courthouse immediately following the hearing.

The arraignment marks a pivotal moment in a case that has sent shockwaves through the Berkshire community, raising serious questions about accountability and the safety of students in educational institutions.

Arraignment Set in Pittsfield Superior Court

Matthew Rutledge is scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, at Berkshire Superior Court, located at 76 East St. in Pittsfield.

He faces three counts of rape connected to reported sexual assaults involving two former female students.

Allegations Involving Two Former Students

The charges stem from alleged incidents involving two former students, identified as Melissa Fares and Hilary Simon.

Authorities say the case centers on three sexual assaults tied to the two women, bringing renewed scrutiny to events that are now moving through the court system.

Community Response and Planned Statements

Following the arraignment, prepared statements are expected to be delivered outside the courthouse.

Those scheduled to speak include District Attorney Timothy J. Shugrue, Rep. Leigh Davis of the 3rd Berkshire District, and the two former students, Hilary Simon and Melissa Fares.

The coordinated public remarks underscore the significance of the case and its emotional impact on those involved, as the legal process formally moves forward in Berkshire Superior Court.
