Geomagnetic Storm Threatens Earth: Spectacular Auroras and Potential Grid Disruptions

Over the weekend a series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections are expected to surge from the Sun. There is a potential for worldwide problems with communications and electrical infrastructure systems. But the Northern Lights will also be magnified by the geomagnetic storm in what promises to be breathtaking views of auroras visible as far south as Alabama and Northern California. 

NOAA expects the power storm to continue throughout the weekend until Sunday

Last week the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued its first watch for a G4 storm. This was the second-strongest rating in nearly two decades. On Friday it was upgraded to a G5, the highest level, signaling extreme geomagnetic conditions.
