In a move to fend off a threat to its existence, TikTok, the wildly popular short-form video platform, has filed a lawsuit in the United States. Filed by its parent company ByteDance, it targets a recent US law signed by President Biden.
This law, known as the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act”, gives TikTok an ultimatum. The company must separate from ByteDance or face a ban in the US over national security concerns.
The legal petition filed by TikTok and ByteDance challenges the constitutionality of the law, arguing that it lacks concrete evidence of any wrongdoing by the Chinese government in relation to TikTok. TikTok asserts that the mandated sale contradicts the principles of free speech and poses insurmountable logistical hurdles.
