In a devastating accident that shocked the Fort Myers community and beyond, a 3-year-old boy at the wheel of a golf cart was involved in a collision that led to a 7-year-old boy's death. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon on private property in Fort Myers, Florida, as per the Florida Highway Patrol's report.

Florida Boy Death Raises Questions About Golf Cart Safety

As the young driver approached a curve in the vicinity of a home, the golf cart struck the 7-year-old boy, who was standing in the front yard. Immediately, the older child was rushed to a local hospital. Regrettably, despite medical efforts, the boy was pronounced dead, marking an inconsolable Florida boy death. The 3-year-old, in contrast, was unharmed. The identities of both boys are being kept private at this time, and it remains unclear if the two were related or if there was parental supervision at the time of the incident. Recently, these concerns motivated the passage of a new law. Just last month, WJFX reported the signing of a bill into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis, which will take effect on October 1. While the law doesn't stipulate a starting age for minors to drive golf carts, it requires that all minors must have a driver's permit or license to drive a golf cart legally in Florida. Further, the law mandates that drivers must be at least 15 years old and have parental consent to obtain a permit.

Nationally, the issue of child golf cart accidents is significant, casting a gloomier shadow over this tragic Florida boy death. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 6,500 children are injured by golf carts annually. Alarmingly, over half of those injured are children under the age of 12.
