Google AI Retooled Search Engine: News Publishers Fear Traffic Decline

Google AI retooled search engine

On Tuesday the Google AI retooled search engine was introduced as a groundbreaking AI feature into its flagship search engine. It also triggered concerns among news publishers. They fear it could drastically reduce traffic to their websites and impact their bottom line.

The change, announced at Google’s annual developers conference, involves integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into search results, then favoring AI-generated responses over traditional website links.

This shift promises to speed up information retrieval but poses a significant threat to the financial model of many media outlets and platforms.

Starting this week, Google’s retooled search engine will be available to hundreds of millions of users in the U.S.

It showcases conversational summaries generated by Google’s AI technology at the top of the search results page. These AI overviews will appear when Google’s algorithms determine they provide the quickest and most effective answer to a user's query. And will be favored particularly for complex topics or during brainstorming and planning activities.

For simpler searches, such as looking for store recommendations or weather forecasts, users will still see traditional website links and ads.

Google began testing these AI summaries with a select group of users a year ago, and now plans to make it a standard feature for about one billion users by the end of the year. Then follow-up with a global rollout.

Google AI Retooled Search Engine

The AI-generated summaries, branded as AI Overviews, will often include links to websites but place them below the summary. This positioning is likely to reduce the number of users clicking through to primary sources, such as news articles, impacting the revenue streams of media outlets that rely on web traffic.

Danielle Coffey, chief executive of the News/Media Alliance, expressed deep concern over the potential impact. "This will be catastrophic to our traffic, as marketed by Google to further satisfy user queries, leaving even less incentive to click through so that we can monetize our content," Coffey told CNN.

The News/Media Alliance, representing over 2,200 news publishers, has been vocal about the challenges the AI boom poses to the media industry. In 2022, the organization released a white paper highlighting how Google’s practices harm the news sector.

"The little traffic we get today will be further diminished, and with a dominant search engine that’s cementing its market power, we once again have to adhere to their terms," Coffey continued. "This time with a product that directly competes with our content, using our content to fuel it. This is a perverse twist on 'innovation.'"

Google's Response

Google has attempted to reassure publishers, claiming that users still click on the links that appear after the AI Overview summary and that this feature will spread traffic across a wider variety of websites. "As we expand this experience, we’ll continue to focus on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators," Google stated in their announcement.

However, preliminary studies indicate that Google’s use of AI in its search engine could reduce website traffic by 25 percent, as reported by The Associated Press.

This potential reduction represents a significant financial hit to publishers, with billions in revenue at stake.

Marc McCollum, chief innovation officer for content creator consultancy Raptive, explained the broader implications. "The relationship between Google and publishers has been pretty symbiotic, but enter AI, and what has essentially happened is the Big Tech companies have taken this creative content and used it to train their AI models." McCollum told the AP that "We are now seeing that being used for their own commercial purposes in what is effectively a transfer of wealth from small, independent businesses to Big Tech."

The Future

The introduction of AI Overviews marks a significant evolution in how search engines operate and how users access information. While it may enhance user experience by providing quicker answers, it also presents challenges for news publishers and content creators who depend on search traffic for revenue.

Google could suffer if the AI overviews undercut ads tied to its search engine. Their Google ads business reeled in $175 billion in revenue last year alone. And website publishers that focus on more narrow subjects could also have reduced traffic.

If AI overviews are so informative that they result in fewer clicks on the website links that will still appear lower on the results page traffic may be impacted.

As Google continues to roll out this feature, the balance between innovation and the financial viability of online outlets will be a critical issue to monitor.
