Hancock Police

In the small, picturesque town of Hancock, Michigan politics led to violence on Sunday. Hancock Police are investigating the circumstances that led to an 80-year-old man being run over by an ATV.

Following this, a 22-year-old man called 911 to confess involvement, only to tragically end his own life.

This incident has stirred the local community and put Hancock in the spotlight, highlighting the dangerous intersection of political expression and violence.

Hancock: A Quiet Town Disrupted

Hancock, with a population of about 5,000, is nestled in northwestern Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Known for its serene beauty and tight-knit community, it rarely sees the kind of disruption it witnessed this past weekend.

The elderly man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was severely injured at 5:45 p.m. as he put up a Trump sign in his front yard. He is currently in critical condition suffering from a brain bleed at a local hospital.

Local law enforcement linked this attack to a series of vandalism incidents that seem to target individuals expressing support for former President Donald Trump or law enforcement.

Hancock Police Chief Tami Sleeman stated, "There is a connection between these acts, and they appear to be politically motivated."

A Tragic Turn of Events

On Monday, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a 22-year-old man who wanted to confess to a crime involving an ATV within the last 24 hours.

He requested that someone come to his home in Quincy Township, where deputies found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The ATV suspected to be involved in the incident was also discovered, along with clothing matching the description given by witnesses.

Neither the victim nor the suspect has been officially identified by authorities. However, it is clear that the suspect was involved in three incidents on Sunday. Two involved vehicle vandalism, where the victims had displayed Trump signs or "thin blue line" stickers supporting law enforcement.

Hancock Police Investigation

The Hancock Police Department, in conjunction with the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Houghton Police Department, Michigan State Police, Mercy EMS, Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the FBI field office in Marquette, is conducting a thorough investigation.

Acting on a search warrant, deputies discovered several electronic devices at the suspect's home, which will undergo analysis at the Michigan State Police Crime Lab.

Sheriff Josh Saaranen mentioned, “That’ll take a little bit of time to get any data that we potentially can glean off of those. Other than that, there was no indication of anybody else being involved.”

The evidence includes the ATV and the clothing linked to the suspect in security footage, which will help determine if he acted alone.

A Community in Shock

Hancock Police Chief Tami Sleeman expressed shock over the events, noting the suspect's behavior captured in video footage. "It appears that he's looking at the back of vehicles, running around the parking lot, as though he's looking for any type of political bumper sticker," Sleeman explained.

The most harrowing aspect of this incident occurred when the suspect yelled obscenities at the elderly man, knocked down his sign, and then struck him with the ATV.

"The victim had his back turned to the four-wheeler, and then he proceeded to hit him from behind, go over him, and leave," said Sleeman. "Any reasonable person knows that running someone over like that, that’s a way you could kill somebody."

Political Motivations and Mental Health

Sheriff Saaranen condemned the suspect's actions, attributing them to what some term "Trump Derangement Syndrome" (TDS), a phrase used pejoratively to describe irrational reactions to former President Donald Trump. TDS is often used to criticize individuals perceived as overreacting to Trump's policies or presidency.

In this election cycle, some individuals have become so deeply polarized that they act irrationally. The term "Trump Derangement Syndrome" underscores a fear that Trump poses a threat to democracy akin to a totalitarian figure like Hitler.

"I don’t believe Houghton County is a place where anybody would condone any kind of political violence against any candidate, whether local or national, and just hope that we as a community can avoid this rhetoric through the campaign season," said Saaranen.

Sleeman echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for civil discourse. "People have the right to express their opinions," she said. "There’s no place for this type of violence."
