Hubble Detects Anti-Correlated Jet Flips On 3I/ATLAS Pointing To A Controlled Rotational System

An unexpected brightness swap between twin jets suggests order, not decay, as scientists track a repeating rhythm from an interstellar visitor.

The latest frames do not quiet the story. They sharpen it.

[USA HERALD] - On December 12 and again on December 27, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope captured high-resolution images of interstellar object 3I/ATLAS that reveal a stable, double-jet structure behaving in a way few expected to see persist this far past perihelion. Across the two observations, the jets do something striking: as one brightens, the other fades. The swap is clean, repeatable, and geometrically consistent. This is not random outgassing. It is anti-correlation.

I examined the raw morphology and brightness distribution, paying particular attention to orientation and persistence. The dominant feature remains a sunward anti-tail—something already observed earlier in the year. What is new, and what demands attention, is the continued presence and behavior of a secondary jet that does not dissipate or wander. Instead, it returns. Structured. Coherent. Aligned. The two jets trade dominance as though governed by a shared mechanism rather than independent bursts.

These are not brief puffs or stochastic releases. The jets maintain shape and direction across time, suggesting fixed source regions on or near the nucleus. Their brightness reversal points to a system where geometry and rotation matter more than chance. The pattern also aligns with a previously observed ~16-hour brightness modulation—often described as a “heartbeat”—that hinted at rotation months earlier. The new data strengthens that interpretation.

Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has outlined two natural explanations that frame the debate. In the first, the jets originate from opposite sides of the nucleus. As 3I/ATLAS rotates, one source becomes active while the other is shaded, with heat conducted through the body to trigger a nightside response. This is physically possible, but it requires unusually efficient thermal transport through the nucleus—far from a given for an interstellar object of uncertain composition.

The second explanation keeps both jets on the sun-facing side but assigns them different particle physics. Larger dust grains, once ejected, are less affected by radiation pressure and form a long, persistent anti-tail. Smaller particles or gas, however, are rapidly decelerated by solar radiation and the solar wind, turning back sooner and forming a shorter, secondary jet. As rotation changes the illumination angle, the relative contribution of each component shifts, producing the observed brightness flip.

What stands out is how neatly this second model explains the data without invoking chaos. It accounts for the length difference between the jets, their alternating brightness, and the apparent wobble seen across frames. Most importantly, it predicts the anti-correlation that Hubble now appears to show: when the anti-tail brightens, the opposing jet weakens, and vice versa. That is exactly what a rotating, misaligned double-jet system should do.

Yet a geometric problem remains unresolved. During perihelion, the Sun deflected 3I/ATLAS’s trajectory by only about 16 degrees. If the object’s rotation axis remained roughly stable, the sun-facing pole identified in July should now be largely on the nightside. And yet, a strong sunward jet persists. Any natural explanation must reconcile that persistence with the object’s limited change in solar orientation.

This is where the story resists easy closure. The behavior does not match a simple picture of a small, exhausted interstellar snowball fading into inactivity. The structure is organized. The variability is patterned. The rotation appears to be in control. Nothing here proves anything exotic—but it does narrow the field of plausible explanations.

The decisive evidence will come from velocity and composition measurements. James Webb Space Telescope spectroscopy can determine where these jets are launching from and how fast their material is moving. If both jets accelerate from the same sun-facing region, composition and particle size effects likely dominate. If launch speeds are unusually high or inconsistent with standard sublimation models, new questions will follow.

For now, the responsible conclusion echoes Loeb’s own guidance: wait for the data. Science works best when observations lead and narratives follow—not the other way around. With each new frame, 3I/ATLAS refuses to settle into expectations. And that alone ensures it has not left the news.

We will continue monitoring every frame as new data emerges.
