‘Cosmic Static or Something More? The Full List of Comets Humanity Has Ever Detected Sending a Radio Signal of Any Kind.’

The question sounds simple—almost too simple—until you realize how few people on Earth can actually answer it without guessing: How many comets have ever been recorded transmitting a radio signal of any kind? I asked this question out loud after MeerKAT’s discovery of the narrow-band 1665 and 1667 MHz absorption signature from 3I/ATLAS, and the deeper I went, the more obvious it became that only a tiny catalog of comets has ever produced anything detectable in the radio spectrum. And none—absolutely none—have behaved like 3I/ATLAS.

In the history of planetary science, radio detection of comets has been rare, difficult, and scientifically valuable. Traditional comets sometimes emit microwave signatures from hydroxyl radicals, sometimes show thermal radio emissions from their comae, and sometimes reflect radar waves that reveal the size and rotation of their nuclei. All of these are natural processes. All of them are expected. And yet the list of comets that have ever been confirmed through radio observation is shockingly short.

In my reporting and research, I found that only a defined group of comets have ever been successfully detected in radio wavelengths: Kohoutek, West, Bradfield, Austin, IRAS–Araki–Alcock, Wilson, Levy, Hyakutake, Hale–Bopp, Ikeya–Zhang, LINEAR, NEAT, Holmes, Lulin, Siding Spring, Lovejoy, ATLAS (2019 Y4), and NEOWISE.

Halley’s Comet remains the most famous example, detected in multiple radio lines and later studied by the Vega spacecraft, where its emissions were measured in unprecedented detail. The Rosetta mission later expanded that record through its direct radio sensing of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. Altogether, counting each confirmed case of natural radio emission or radar reflection, we have roughly twenty examples across fifty years of modern radio astronomy.

That is the entire list. That is all of them. And every one of those detections reflects ordinary physics—thermal noise, hydroxyl-related emission, molecular rotation lines, radar echoes, and coma activity from volatiles boiling off the nucleus as the Sun heats them. Not one of those comets ever produced a narrow-band, discrete, water-hole absorption signature like the one detected from 3I/ATLAS on October 24, 2025.

That is the part of this investigation that sent a chill up my spine.

The hydroxyl radical produces spectral lines at 1665.4018 and 1667.3590 MHz—a scientifically important range nicknamed the “water hole” because it sits between hydrogen’s 21-cm line and hydroxyl’s rotational emissions, forming a naturally quiet region that SETI researchers have pointed to for fifty years as the most logical channel for any civilization to broadcast.

The fact that humanity’s third interstellar object—3I/ATLAS—registered not emission but absorption at these same frequencies, just five days before its perihelion, violates decades of cometary physics. Heating from the Sun should have maximized OH emission, not suppressed it. And no known comet in recorded astronomy has ever displayed behavior remotely like this.

As I’ve written for months, Avi Loeb remains the leading authority on the scientific anomalies surrounding 3I/ATLAS, and his warning has been clear: if this signature repeats at closest Earth approach on December 19, 2025, we are no longer talking about an ordinary interstellar rock. What is at stake is nothing less than determining whether this object is natural or artificial.

When you compare 3I/ATLAS to all other comets that have ever produced detectable radio signals, the contrast is absolute. Traditional comets produce broad, thermal, noisy signals generated by chemistry and sunlight.

3I/ATLAS delivered a narrow-band, highly specific absorption pattern precisely at frequencies humanity has historically associated with potential communication. And unlike ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov, which produced no radio anomalies at all, 3I/ATLAS has now crossed into territory never before observed from any comet-like object in the Solar System.

The public deserves transparency, and so do the scientists racing to make sense of this object. NASA, JPL, and the Planetary Defense Coordination Office should release every spectrum, every instrument readout, and every HiRISE image still sitting behind government walls. Politics should not interfere with scientific truth, especially at a moment when the world is actively trying to determine whether we are witnessing the first interstellar technology ever detected by humankind or simply the strangest natural comet ever recorded.

The fact remains: of every comet ever observed producing a radio signal of any kind, none match 3I/ATLAS. Not in structure. Not in behavior. Not in spectral signature. And not in timing.

As December 19 approaches, the scientific world is waiting to see whether the universe keeps its silence—or whether the water hole speaks again.
