Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has created controversy by refusing to give a deposition to Congress. He defied a subpoena to appear before the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees. 

Instead, he held a press conference on Capitol Hill, addressing critics and vehemently denying any financial involvement by his father in his business dealings. The situation has ignited calls to hold Hunter in contempt of Congress. 

And the scrutiny of the Biden family's business connections continues.

"Hunter Biden, this ain't Burger King. You can't Have It Your Way when it comes to congressional subpoenas. Quit the stunts, make your way to the deposition room, and let's talk," Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., posted on X. 

Donalds also responded to Hunter's claim he was being targeted by "MAGA Republicans," saying that, "'MAGA Republicans' did not impugn Hunter Biden's character. Hunter Biden did that to himself."

Hunter Defied a Subpoena 

Hunter Biden's decision to disregard the congressional subpoena and opt for a press conference has ignited a storm of criticism. Critics argue that this move amounts to obstruction of justice, with some demanding contempt charges against him. 

The spotlight on Hunter's business dealings, particularly with Ukrainian firm Burisma Holdings, a Russian billionaire, and multi-millions in Chinese investments, has intensified, and his refusal to comply with the subpoena has added fuel to the political fire.

According to Hunter, "They belittled my recovery, and they have tried to dehumanize me, all to embarrass my father, who has devoted his entire life to public service." 

"For six years I have been a target of the unrelenting Trump attack team. ‘Where’s Hunter?’ Well, here’s my answer. I am here," Hunter said.

Although Hunter believes it is a “double standard,” Donald Trump’s son, Don Jr. was called to Congress on multiple occasions.   

Hunter’s critics pointed to 2 of his business partners' testimony, bank statements, and evidence from the now-infamous laptop.

During the press conference, Hunter Biden asserted that his father, President Joe Biden, was never financially involved in his business ventures. This marks a shift from previous statements. 

Political Backlash

Conservatives and Republicans on the House Oversight Committee pushed back on social media, claiming Hunter would face consequences for his “stunt.” The overall Republican response to Hunter's press conference has been critical. 

Lawmakers such as Rep. Paul Gosar and Rep. Lauren Boebert have called for holding Hunter in contempt, claiming this is an obstruction of justice. 

Critics highlight the evolving narratives surrounding the Biden family's business connections, from claims of no discussions to now emphasizing the lack of financial involvement. This shifting narrative is drawing increased attention from media outlets and political commentators.

Republican lawmakers insist that Hunter must comply with the subpoena, rejecting the notion that he can dictate the terms of his testimony.  The tension between Hunter's legal strategy and congressional demands is heightening, with the prospect of contempt charges looming.
