The dramatic turn of events unfolded with a vote of 216-210 in favor of McCarthy’s removal, sending shockwaves through the political landscape. Gaetz’s motion, which declared the office of the Speaker vacant, paved the way for this historic vote.

The contentious relationship between Rep. Matt Gaetz and Kevin McCarthy has been a long-standing feud, with Gaetz emerging as McCarthy’s chief adversary within the House.

Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida played a pivotal role in instigating this motion to vacate the office of the Speaker of the House.

Pushing him from the top job marked a significant rebuke of congressional leadership. This unprecedented move occurred on Tuesday when eight Republicans crossed party lines to join Democrats in a vote to remove McCarthy from his role.

Gaetz, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, initiated this motion as news broke that several House lawmakers intended to attend the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s funeral in California.
