Marion County Record Defiantly Publishes Weekly Edition After Police Raid – USA Herald
Police Chief was suspended and lawsuits pendingĀ
Eric Meyer, the editor and publisher of the Marion County Record, strongly believes that the real motive behind the search was the paper’s investigation into Chief Cody’s previous law enforcement work. And the chief had on-the-job issues just months before he took over as police chief in Marion.
Caitlin Vogus, Deputy Director of Advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, expressed her concerns, stating, “Anyone should have realized that sending the entire police force to search a newsroom because journalists verified information from a source is an outrageous overreaction that threatens freedom of the press. This raid never should have happened.”
The repercussions of this controversy have extended far beyond the borders of Marion, Kansas. The town, home to about 2,000 residents, located 60 miles northeast of Wichita, has been thrust into the national spotlight.
