“Love, compassion, empathy, these are the things that could prevent situations how she passed,” Yamil said.

“I’m not damning or wanting vengeance, but people should pay for the energy they put out,” said Little.

Little said his mother was proudly 36 years clean and sober. And she was a sponsor and friend to “so many” people fighting addiction.

Tyrome Lewis chooses to remember his good friend Portia at her surprise birthday party, a few weeks ago. They celebrated the 71-year-old’s birthday and talked about her work with people in recovery or suffering from addiction.

Lewis is holding on to those good memories. And trying to celebrate her life in light of the tragedy.

At the time of her death Portia had just attended a meeting. Nobody heard from her after that. But friends and family say stories of her work and the impact she had on others will continue.

“She came here just visiting and got nine sponsees,” said Lewis.

“Just when you think you’ve found somebody to help you through your problems somebody takes her away. Nobody should have to deal with this type of pain,” Lewis emphasized.
