As Democrats gear up for the 2020 presidential election, they’re not holding back. The amount of contenders who are hoping to take on President Trump in 2020 has reached double digits.

Sen. Bernie Sanders is one of those contenders and is wasting no time in going after his political opposition. On Tuesday, Sanders stated that President Trump and Republicans are working to “suppress” certain Americans from voting.

This comes after Sanders articulated his belief that even convicted felons behind bars ought to be able to vote.

Sanders on Trump and the Republican Party

The senator has taken a considerable amount of heat for stating that incarcerated felons should have voting rights. However, in spite of censure, Sanders is not backing down. As a matter of fact, he doubled down yesterday.

During an interview with CNN, Sanders stood by his position; he also accused President Trump and the Republican Party of intentionally trying to stop certain groups of people from voting.

In his own words:

“At a time when the Republican Party and Donald Trump are working overtime to suppress the vote, to make it harder for people of color and poor people, young people to vote; we have got to make it clear, in my view, that if you are an American citizen, even if you do something terrible, even if you’re a bad person, we cannot take away your right to vote whether you’re in jail or whether you’ve left jail.”
