The Government Just Dropped Its Biggest UFO Files in History. Here Is What They Actually Reveal

For decades, millions of people have asked the same burning question: What does the government really know about UFOs? In May 2026, Washington finally started answering, and the result has been equal parts fascinating and frustrating.

The U.S. Department of Defense launched a sweeping new declassification initiative called the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, known by the acronym PURSUE. The program was created to release military data and historical documents related to unidentified aerial phenomena directly to the public through a dedicated government website. It is, by any measure, the most ambitious government UFO disclosure effort in American history.

What Triggered the Releases?

The releases were prompted by an executive order President Trump signed earlier this year, mandating the Pentagon to disclose more documents related to UFOs. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth framed the move as a matter of public trust, saying the files had been "hidden behind classifications" and had "long fueled justified speculation," adding that it was time the American people saw them for themselves.

Trump himself weighed in on Truth Social, directing the Pentagon and relevant agencies to begin identifying and releasing government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, UAP, and UFOs. He framed the disclosure as giving people the chance to "decide for themselves, 'WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?'"

Three Releases and Counting

The first release took place on May 8, 2026, and included Apollo mission photos, NASA transcripts of astronauts discussing lunar UFOs, witness accounts of a cigar-shaped object at a restricted government test facility, and law enforcement reports of orbs launching other orbs.

That initial batch contained 162 files from the FBI, Department of Defense, NASA, and State Department, covering eyewitness testimony, photos, and reports of sightings dating back decades from around the globe. Among the more striking historical items was a reference to the infamous 1947 Roswell incident, including an FBI memo from a Dallas field office agent reporting that an Air Force major had called to say a flying disc had been recovered near Roswell, New Mexico.

The second tranche arrived two weeks later and included 64 files, among them six PDF documents, seven audio files, and 51 video files showing footage of UAPs from military aircraft, each accompanied by a detailed description. The most gripping document in that release was a firsthand account from a currently serving senior intelligence officer who described a series of close UAP encounters during a late-2025 helicopter mission. The officer wrote that he and the crew observed countless orange orbs swarming in all directions against a mountain backdrop, and that two large orbs flared up side by side, stationary and just above the helicopter's rotor disk.

The third batch, released on June 12, 2026, contained 72 files dating from the 1940s to the present day, demonstrating that government investigators had looked into UFO sightings not only in the United States but around the world.

What the Files Actually Contain

The range of material is genuinely remarkable. The roughly two dozen videos in the initial release, running a combined 41 minutes, show reported encounters around the world between 2020 and 2026. Most feature infrared camera footage tracking white objects that appear as moving specks on the screen. One report accompanying a video taken in Greece in 2023 described an object making multiple 90-degree turns at approximately 80 miles per hour.

A 2008 CIA report detailed a UFO sighting above the Harare International Airport in Zimbabwe that was transmitted to the White House Situation Room and the intelligence community. Observers described the object as disc-like with a hollow center and a series of rotating lights on its underside, and said it appeared to emanate beams of light.

A more recent 2022 sighting near Colorado Springs, Colorado, described a potato-shaped object that appeared to be painted in a creamy, whitish, opalescent color and was described as somewhat translucent.

The third release also included documents from a CIA panel convened in 1952 and 1953, which concluded that flying saucers did not pose a direct physical threat to national security but recommended an official policy of debunking the subject to strip it of its mystery, with the concern that excessive public fascination could be exploited by adversaries.

Perhaps the most unsettling document from the third release was a 1958 CIA memo in which an officer expressed regret over being instructed to give a scientist, who had helped develop the atomic bomb and later investigated UFO sightings, an answer described as "extraordinarily noncommittal and evasive" because records related to his inquiry had been destroyed.

What Scientists and Skeptics Are Saying

Not everyone is convinced the files reveal anything extraordinary. Astrophysicist David Whitehouse reviewed the materials and concluded that many were optical artifacts, blurry images, or light smears, with some obviously being balloons. He found no evidence of anything artificial and alien.

Astronomer Michael Narlock noted that the documents largely contained transcripts of eyewitness accounts, which he described as notoriously unreliable, while the videos lacked sufficient context to draw firm conclusions.

Among UFO enthusiasts, reactions on social media were mixed, with some expressing confusion at the inclusion of computer-generated imagery and others claiming the release included material that had already been circulating in paranormal books and media for decades.

Why This Still Matters

Even those who walked away unimpressed by the specific contents have to acknowledge the broader significance of what is happening. For the first time in American history, the federal government has created a dedicated, public-facing website to host classified UAP documents. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard described a comprehensive, multi-agency declassification program currently underway, suggesting the releases are far from over. Wikipedia

The documents also reveal something important that is easy to overlook: the U.S. government has been actively investigating UFO sightings from Iraq, Syria, Greece, the Persian Gulf, Papua New Guinea, Kazakhstan, Zimbabwe, and dozens of other locations for decades. Whether or not any of those sightings have a sensational explanation, the sheer global scope of documented investigations is itself a significant revelation.

The question of what these objects are remains open. They could represent advanced foreign military technology, natural atmospheric phenomena, misidentified conventional aircraft, or something else entirely. What the files make undeniably clear is that the U.S. government has taken the subject seriously for a very long time, even as it publicly downplayed it.

The next release of documents is expected, and each new batch will likely add more questions than answers. But for the millions of people who have spent years demanding transparency, the era of waiting in the dark is, at least officially, over.
